ARC TBC Fredric(k) Bartlett Little

Postby keefypops » Sun Feb 07, 2016 4:40 pm

Hi,
I'm wondering if someone can help me on this one please?
This man ( my wife's g grandfather) was born in 1838 in Bath, married 1865, had children and was last recorded on a census in 1881 as a Solicitor in
Kingston. He features in 1885 in a Kelly's directory in Southampton in a village called Hamble- Le-Rice. We have found out from Lloyds that he owned
a steam yacht till 1888 and his address when this was sold was Glenlyon Southampton. Then a brick wall. The only "lead" in FMP is a sailing list entry for an
F Little to Natal 1895.
He features on a website called SA Settlers where his former wife ( who had remarried) and then died in Capetown
We have no idea where he went to or where he died, or perhaps this was an assumed death so his former wife could remarry.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. I expect that you have all of this already, but for anyone else, here it is.

Frederic Bartlett Little was "deceased" in 1894:

Name: Frederic Stanley Bartlett Little
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868
Age: 26
Spouse: Charlotte Jane McDonald
Spouse Age: 26
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 30 Aug 1894
Parish: All Saints, Poplar
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: Frederic Bartlett Little
Spouse Father: Michael Mcdonald
Register Type: Parish Register

and Laura married as a widow in 1897

Name: Laura Ella Little
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849
Age: 48
Spouse: Edgar John Robert Reynolds
Spouse Age: 35
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 24 Apr 1897
Parish: St Luke, Westbourne Park
Borough: Westminster
Father Name: Harry Bridges Smith
Spouse Father: John Francis Reynolds
Register Type: Parish Register

1891 has Laura Ella "married" and living in Falmouth area

Laura E Little 45
Trevor B Little 16
Ellen F Little 24
Mary Tarraway 18

so I suppose that either he died between 1891 and 1894, or he vanished and they assumed he was dead?
I noticed that his brother was divorced and then remarried, so I should have thought that was an option if the marriage had broken down.
Odd though if there is no probate for him if he died. There are wills a-plenty fro everyone else!

Hi,
A big thank you to Gardener for adding this information. I was not sure how much to put in the first posting and
am grateful for this.
Several members of my wife's family have been trying to find the illusive" FBL" for quite some time.
We think he had moved away from the family well before 1891 as there is reference to him alone in Hamble-Le- Rice
in 1885.
The subsequent location in Southampton makes it convenient to think he disappeared abroad. I did find these applications for passports
but they led to no greater detail. Also tantalizingly an F Little did sail to Natal later.
Last name First name Born Died Event Record set Location
Little F B — — 1887 Index to Register of Passport Applications 1851-1903 —

Little F B — — 1892 Index to Register of Passport Applications 1851-1903 —
However. If he applied for a passport in 1892 why was he missing from the 1891 census?
As you say there was no will but he had been a Solicitor, which seems a bit odd.
I hope this helps and if anyone can throw some light on this it would be much appreciated.

There was no real need for a passport until WW1 I think, so passports are a bit hit and miss before then.

Have you considered the guy that died in Florida? On Ancestry his middle name is transcribed as Bertell but if you look at how "Little" is written it seems to me that the middle name is more likely Bartlett, with the "l" a little taller and one cross-stroke for the all "t" letters.

The will is written 28th May 1894, leaving everything to Alborough Mackley for her "absolute use and benefit", and then there is a date 27 Nov 1896 which is the probate date.

The 1881 census has

Portsea, Portsmouth
John A. Mackley 43 head
Carolina Mackley 43 wife
Alborough Mackley 20 dau

John A. Mackley is an attorney's clerk/solicitor's clerk/ law t? in 1861/71/81 so I just wonder if Frederic ran off with young Ms Alborough? The dates seem to fit.

Meant to say, his name is Frederic in the first bit of the document (where it is transcribing the words of his will) and then a k is added later in the document.

Dear Gardener,
Brilliant work indeed.
I've passed this on to the other people in the family that are interested.
I wish there was some way I could thank you for all this.
It takes someone new to look at things. Your skill and tenacity are most appreciated.

Kind Regards
