ARC TBC William Raybould--

Postby nailer2011 » Fri Jan 29, 2016 7:36 pm

Hi,
My search for my Raybould family connection is ongoing - still - :!: and I was wondering if anybody can help me with the details of the marriage of a William Raybould to an Ann Cope in Pensnett, Brierley Hill, on 31 August 1857 :?: . The transcript shows William's father as another William Raybould and I am trying to identify which William was his father.
BCC has the William Raybould who was married to Rosanna Hingley (my connection) and the William Raybould who was married to Phoebe Homer. Of course, it could be a completely different William.
All and any help would be appreciated : :-)

BCW,
Thank you again, but my William's father was alive and well and living in Cradley in 1857.

I will have to think of some other way of resolving this one.
Your help was much appreciated. :-)

Postby nailer2011 » Fri Feb 05, 2016 9:12 pm

Hi Jan,

I am trying to find out what happened to William Raybould, the son of William Raybould and Rosanna Hingley, of Cradley. Census records show his year of birth as circa 1834 and that he was living with his parents up until 1851, in Cradley; also, there are newspaper references to him up until about 1855. I cannot find a death record so wondered if he was the William RABOULD who married an Ann Cope, in Pensnett, on 31 August 1857.

The transcript on the FamilySearch website has the spelling shown above but also that his father was a William and Ann's father was a John Cope. I was hoping someone would be able to help with the description of his father on the marriage record.

In any event, as you say, the information already kindly provided in response to my queries fills in a few gaps on another Raybould family shown on BCC.

Thank you......H :-) :-)

Hi,

I think Linell has misunderstood the references in the Vicar's Notebooks. Above she suggests that the note (ill) next to the listing for William Raybould indicates that he was illegitimate and that would have gone some way to explaining why I am having trouble identifying the 'roots' of this family. However, page 6 of the notes at the beginning of the document (1857 version) explains that Rev Thompson identified individuals who did not attend church accompanied by the reason, for example, ill, babies, no clothes etc.

The reference to William Raybould includes "no church" and the reason is "ill"; that is, his excuse was that he was unwell health-wise ; probably, just a convenient excuse :!:

Sorry I do not agree Nailer. No Church means no Parish Church, Chapels were not considered to be Churches, they were outlawed by the Clergy. My Cradley families, are listed as No Church because they were Methodists and Baptists. All the Parish Records use 'ill' as an abbreviation of Illegitimate. As you say yourself that does indeed explain why you cannot trace Williams family back any further. Probably baptised in his mother's maiden name.

Linell,

Thank you for your continuing interest. I thought the notes in the Notebook 'fitted' the situation but I do accept that it is possible William may be illegitimate, as no verifiable record has been found yet of his parents' marriage; and his siblings were baptised only after Vicar Thompson started his visits to their home.

I have been and am searching Staffordshire parish records looking for an illegitimate birth that may fit the bill, but as yet with no success. :?

My search goes on.

Regards...H
