*Archive?* newbe getting nowhere fast

Postby FatBloke » Fri Aug 12, 2011 5:39 pm

Hello all*****
Forgive me for my ignorance, but I am after a little help.
My lovely little dear of a grandmother b4 she died sent me a small family tree.
but I would like to go further back, but don’t really know where to start.

So far we have gone back as far as
Charles Hall, DoB: 1853, district: Williton (Somerset)
Married: 17/7/1876 to Sarah Burnett @ old Cleeve Church.
Died: 8/8/1912 aged 59 district Williton (Somerset)

I have conformed this using the FreeBMD
So now "and im guessing" I would have to get his birth certificate to find who his mother + father are?
If this is the case

Do I have to pay for these?
Can I get them only? If so can they be got for free?
Also can I go further back? If so do I have to be a member of NASA to work this out?

I really have no idea about how, where when, or how. So if any1 is willing to help, that would be great

Looking forward to this lol

Thanks

Fatty

You could use the census.

Try this site:
http://www.freecen.org.uk/

I'd start by trying to find him post marriage, and then work backwards.
You could also order the marriage certificate as this should show his father and father's occupation.

Not all census records are on that site, so if you want someone to check on one of the subscription sites then post on Census Look up.

Hope this helps :-)

That you have just added says
"Sarah Ann was Mother to the 7 sons Grandad Hall (Herbert) must have been 1 yr old when she died."

That could possibly tie in with that Sarahs death and she was about that age too.
