Thankyou No wonder she couldn't find the marriage!
So her father was Joseph Mellor..she was born c1853 so should be on 1861 census with both her parents. Could anyone find me any of the censuses for Elizabeth before she was married please. That would be great! :)

:-) :-)

Now I am baffled!
Elizabeth Mellor seems to be down as Elizabeth Whittaker, married, in 1881

55 Peel St, Macclesfield
Joseph Mellor m 52 Leek, Stafford, silk dyer emp. 6 men
Lucy Mellor m 59 Hipstones, Staffs
Elizabeth Whittaker dau m 26 Leek, Staffs
Emily mellor dau 24 Macclesfield, dressmaker
Kate Mellor, dau 22 ditto, maker up silk
Richard C Mellor son 19 ditto silk dyer

Is that the right one?

Mar qtr 1878

Elizabeth Clowes Mellor m Henry Whittaker Macclesfield 8a 179

(Clowes was given as middle name for Elizabeth's mother Lucy, and her brother seems to have it as the initial C in 1881)

It looks like the smae person in all the censuses doesn't it? and as she was born c1855 I suppose she could have married in 1878 and then again in 1885 if something happened to Henry Whittaker. Perhaps he died?? She would have been 23 when she married him and it seems strange that he isn't with her on 1881 census when she's 26. Could she possibly have used her maiden name when she married Matthew?

It looks to me as though her first husband may have done a runner and she remarried 7 years later under her maiden name.
If she'd had no contact with for 7 years she could assume that he had died, even if he hadn't died.

Perhaps you're right as I can't find a death for him on FreeBMD. I didn't realise she could remarry if he wasn't dead!

Oh that's ok then. I'm a bit confused about the name "Clowes" It sounds more like a surname than a christian or middle name. Could it have been Lucy's maiden name do you think?

Possible, I have had it happen a few times when it turned out to be the maiden name of the grand mother.
