So in the 1881 census it looks like she wasn't with James Charnley after all so that rules him out as the father. The Woods children must all be related to her, not him. James was possibly her brother? Not old enough to be her father.
Thomas must have died and she then married John. I still can't understand why he is Floyd on the marriage certificate and John is down as his father though

Could they just write anything they liked on the certificates? Surely they are legal documents??

I tend to agree with you about Frederick's parenthood. I suspect that under "relationship to head" there is a mistake and that it is meant that he (and his siblings) are sons/daughters of Elizabeth WOODS. As for the marriage certificate: I think we can only speculate.

(apologies: in my earlier post I should have put Frances' age as 1 (one))

Could anyone find me the 1871 census for Elizabeth and Thomas Woods please. As Frederick Arthur was born that year I was wondering if Elizabeth and John were any where near each other at the time. I'm trying to find out if there is any chance that John was the father. Thank you.

Is this them - earlier in this thread - by Stonewaller

I have also found what Jimmy found on the 1881 census.

In 1871, at 1 Sidney Place, Preston:
Thomas WOODS Head Mar Male 31 Preston, Lancashire, Cotton Weaver
Eliz. WOODS Wife Mar Female 25 Preston, Lancashire
William A. WOODS Son Male 3 Preston, Lancashire, Scholar
John J. WOODS Son Male 2 Preston, Lancashire
Frances WOODS Daur Female 10 Preston, Lancashire

Hope this helps.

Thank you That's a great help as I now know they were in separate counties the year Frederick was born. I am going to continue searching both Floyd and Woods for a little while just to see what happens. I will start a new thread for Thomas Woods.
On Frederick's marriage to Mary Bessie Higgins he lists his father as John William Floyd (deceased) in 1904 He was an architect The marriage was at The Parish Church of South Shore, County of Lancaster They were living at 33 Bagot Street. Could we possibly find out anything about John William Floyd please. Thanks again for your help on this :)
