*Archive?* David Eades marriage - UPDATE

Postby snoopysue » Thu Jan 20, 2011 7:53 pm

I can't find a marriage between David Eades and Isabella Unknown.

David born Tipton 1854.
Lived in Middlesborough with parents Soloman and Jemima (both from Staffs).
On 1881 census David is in Cockemouth, Cumberland - he's single and a presbytarian minister. By 1891 he's married to Isabella (b.abt 1854, Isle of White) living in Aston Tirrold,Berkshire, and they have three children: John Gordon and Ethel, both born in Cumberland; Andrew Bonar born in Berkshire. By 1901 they're back in Durham and have son David Conley, also born in Berkshire.
David dies in june 1937, by that time he's living in Surrey (probate records).

I've searched for a marriage, but can't find one - could them being presbytarian have anything to do with it?

The location's right, a bit strange as he's down as single on the census!
What time of day was the census taken? He was a boarder, and as a minister I couldn't imagine he'd keep it a secret - too many toungues would start wagging!!!

Isabella's father was a coastguard, would explain her being born on the Isle of White. Her parents were in Cornwall in 1881, still can't see Isabella in 1881 though!

I'd already checked the houses close by for an Isabella of the right age, but couldn't find any! I suppose there's always the chance that the people he was lodging with didn't know he was getting married and filled in the census before they found out, and that she wasn't recorded at her old address.

That 1871 census looks right MG

Was this more of a secret marriage than we thought?

on 1881 Scottish Census!!

Isabella Cowley
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1854
Relationship: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Isle of Wight, England
Registration Number: 685/1
Registration district: St George
Civil Parish: St George
County: Midlothian
Address: 3. Bellevue Crescent
Occupation: Lady'S Maid, (Domestic Serv)

Lady's Maid could have been travelling -- was Scottish census the same night?

Is my imagination running away with me and I should go to bed?

It's a shame I can't see the image on ancestry :(
What's interesting is that David and Isabella have a son (their first child) called John Gordon Eades and the head of the house hold is down as L.L.D John Gordon!

If your imagination is running away with you, then so is mine!!!!

They're on the England Census, just looked on google maps, it's just outside of Maryport south west of Carlisle. You can look across the Solway Firth to Scotland!

You may be right there MG!
And if he had been up in Cumbria! Boundary changes?

They would give so much info!
Cant think now how much it costs but if you just check this?

Very long pregnancy or creative accounting if your imagination is correct!

John Gordon Eades 1882 Apr-May-Jun Cumbria, Cumberland

Maybe named after the couple because they supported the marriage! -- wonder who the witnesses were!

Their other son was variously recorded as having a 1st/2nd name of Conley/Conlay/Cowley on various census -- after mother's maiden name!

There's also an Andrew Bonar Eades, seems to have been called Bonar. On their father's probate record they're down as John Gordon, Andrew Bonar and David Conley - I would imagine these spelling to be correct as thay all seem to have done okay for themselves: David followed in his father's footsteps and became a minister, John and Andrew possibly could have been in buisness with their uncle Soloman - who was a piano dealer. Their sister Ethel was a music teacher.
