Just wondering when these became legal?
Did they start as a thing for the rich or for everyone at the same time?
What was the driving force behind them?

HTH from Linell.
Thank you Linell - lots of useful facts but I couldn't find when the ceremony was actually legally able to take place in the registry office as opposed to the CofE Parish Church ( except of course Jews and Quakers!) Maybe it has always been possible since 1837 Marriage Act just that not many did.
