There is this census entry:

1851
Walsall Foreign/Darlaston
Saml Bullen 48 coal miner
Rosehannah ditto wife 46 Bilston
3 sons
3 dau
John Stokes ap 16 coal miner's apprentice Penkridge
Herbert Davis ap 14
Edwd Stokes ap 13 Bristol
Saml Stokes ap 11 Bristol

There is a Reuben Edward born Bristol
STOKES, REUBEN EDWARD WILLIAMS
GRO Reference: 1837 D Quarter in BRISTOL Volume 11 Page 131
STOKES, SAMUEL WILLIAMS
GRO Reference: 1840 M Quarter in BRISTOL Volume 11 Page 152

in 1841 they are split up I think, Reuben with his grandmother?

Caroline Williams married Reuben Stokes 23 Jul 1837, fathers Samuel Stokes and Edward Williams, married at Dundry but say Bristol for parish (freereg)

1841
Bristol
Susannah William 45 ind y
John ditto 20 y
William ditto 12 y
Ruben Stakes 3 y

1841
Bristol
Caroline Stokes 23 washerwoman y
Samuel ditto 17 months y

and then Caroline died perhaps
STOKES, CAROLINE 30
GRO Reference: 1848 D Quarter in BRISTOL Volume 11 Page 133

Of course, this does not quite fit if Edward's father was Joseph! Caroline and Reuben had kids baptised through to 1848 and he is a smith or chainmaker on those records. Just putting this down in case it fits anywhere
