1871 Census - Reuben Buckwell COMPLETED

Postby SRD » Fri Apr 07, 2017 9:49 am

Please can anyone find Reuben Buckwell, b 1844 Brighton to Edward Stanford Buckwell & Sarah Illman in the 1871 census.
His first wife, Hannah West, was living at 10 Dinapore Street, Brighton, Sussex and described as Head of Household.
His second wife, Hannah Mary Pilmer was living in her mother's home in York but he didn't marry her 'til 1873 which was either bigamous or he'd divorced his first wife.

But I can't find Reuben himself.

Thanks

On the 1871 census of the Pilmer family is an unmarried boarder Reuben Foster age 26 a Joiner, states born Dorking surrey.
This i believe is your Reuben who was a Carpenter/Joiner by trade.

There was only one birth registered for a Reuben Foster between 1840-1850 and he was born in Alford Surrey and is there with his wife in 1871.
Hannah Mary Pilmer is unmarried and working as a maid on 1891/1901 census perhaps having found out the marriage was false.
In 1891 Reuben is with 'wife' Jessie formerly Jessie Bean born York there is no marriage for them and when she died in 1929 she was described as Spinster and her estate was administered by Oliver Manhire the husband of her Daughter Ivy Maud Manhire nee Buckwell.
