Balaclava Elizabeth Hounsom, née Tucker COMPLETED

Postby SRD » Sat Mar 12, 2016 6:46 pm

I have a Balaclava Elizabeth Tucker, b 1861 in Beeding, Sussex to John & Mary Hilton. She married Albert David Hounsom in 1886. I have them in Barking in 1891, Albert died in 1892 and was buried in Barking, 30 Dec 1892. I don't have any record of any children and no sign of Balaclava after that 1891 Census.
Can anyone find her please.
Thanks.

The only thing that I can see is the one included on an ancestry as the same person. But it isn't a good fit. First name and birthplace are OK but not surname or age.

1911
Brighton
Balaclava Monks cook 44 widowed (20, 1, 1 crossed out) Cooking at ditto (refers to entry above , at U-22 Bedford Sq, Hotel), Beeding, Sussex

1901
27 Addington Rd. London, Poplar (only person at that address)
Balaclava Monk serv mar 38 Housekeeper, Brighton, Sussex

and a Balaclava Monk was Admitted 15 Oct 1901 to the workhouse, Tower Hamlets, Poplar, servant, born 1863

Make of that what you will

I've found Balaclava Monk's death
Deaths Jun 1928 (>99%)
Monk Balaclava 57 Pancras 1b 100

Assuming that's correct she can't be Balaclava Tucker, but I can't find Balaclava Monk before that Workhouse entry where she's shown as requiring 1 Sickness Child Diet so is presumably accompanied by her child who must be too young to warrant an entry of it's own (incidentally she was discharged a fortnight later). I can't find a marriage between a Balaclava and a Monk, the child's birth registration, nor can I find any other Balaclava that might fit the bill regarding births.

Thanks Jimmy, I've got her 1862 baptism record. But the only Balaclava I can find that was born around the time that Balaclava Monk(s) is inferred from her census record to have been born, is a male who died soon after. And none in the Brighton/Beeding area. Neither can I find any sign of a marriage between a Balaclava and a Monk, nor the registration of the child suggested in the Workhouse & 1911 census records. There is one child, Ada, attributed to an Elizabeth Tucker, marked as illegitimate, but Elizabeth Tucker is a not uncommon name and I can't find any further evidence of Ada.

I don't think that 1911 workhouse entry indicates a child's presence. I think "Sick" was just the 8th type of diet http://www.workhouses.org.uk/life/food.shtml

There is another workhouse admission in 1926, and it gives her birth year as '70, but '60 has been crossed out. She is homeless, with no known family.

Here is a summary

Record type B-year Birthplace Name
Birth 1861 Breeding Balaclava Elizabeth Tucker
1871 census 1862 Breding Balaclera Tucker
1881 census 1863 Beeding Balaclava Tucker
1891 census 1865 Beading Balaclava Hounson
1901 census 1863 Brighton Balaclava Monk
1901 wkhouse 1863 Balaclava Monk
1911 census 1867 Beeding Balaclava Monks
1926 wkhouse 12.7.[60]70 Balaclava Monk
Death 1928 1871 Balaclava Monk

Thanks, a second look and I agree about the diet. But the 1911 census also shows a child born and alive.

I'd not seen that second workhouse entry, There's no discharge date, just a tick. I wonder if that meant she died there. It would explain the Pancras registration of her death. However the month of birth add to it being Balaclava Tucker.
