*ARC TBC* 1861 census

Postby Gamegirlxx » Fri Aug 08, 2014 2:29 pm

I have been researching my family history - my maiden name JARVIS and have been successful with locating my ancestors on all the census entries except 1861. I'm not sure why this is, I was wondering of anyone could shed some light on this? The family were currently in Crayford, Kent in 1851 and the head of the family was down as a 'pauper (calico printer)' age 83. In 1871 the same family (excluding the head and his wife as they were pretty old), had moved to Middlesex. I have obviously searched each member of the family with no luck.
Thanks :-)

Have you tried looking at the addresses from 1851 and 1871 to see if the surname has been mistranscribed? Another possibilty I've come across is that when a family moved they used a different surname (his mother's maiden name) on the first census, as I'd got all the childrens names, and as they were living at the same address ten years later (with the original surname), I knew I'd got the right family.

Hi
Would you like to post the details of the people that you are looking for? There are a heap of them in 1851 and I am not sure which you want.
Have you tried searching for surname only, born Crayford, Kent. That should flush some of them out. Females may have married I suppose.

Wow! Thank you everyone for your posts! That's so helpful! Well seems like you have found the same as me so:

1841 census Crayford vilage, crayford
James Jarvis
Alice Jarvis
Caleb Jarvis
Martha "
Caleb "
Henry "
George "

1851 census Church street, Crayford
James Jarvis
Alice "
Martha "
Caleb "

I'm a bit confused by quite a lot really! It seems James and Alice had Caleb & Martha. Then Caleb marries Elizabeth Hudson and they have 4 children Caleb, Henry, George & William. This Caleb then marries Charlotte Ann Brightwell (I have this certificate). The older Caleb is down as deceased on the marriage certificate (1865). I also need to check the death entries found for Alice & James as I think they look right. I still am finding it hard to trace anyone during 1861. I need to check back over the posts again to digest the information! I thought that the name Caleb would be easy to find but it seems not so..There are lots of variations through the generations like George Caleb, Caleb George, William Caleb etc!
James Jarvis is my 5x great grandfather- I think! Just getting stuck around the calebs and the absence of an 1861 census.
Thanks again everyone x
