Ann Dodman & Francis Osbistone

Postby Scratch And Patch » Fri Feb 15, 2013 5:54 pm

Ann Dodman born ABT 1819 Helhoughton ( where is this in Norfolk )? Was married to Francis Osbistone b. 1804 East Raynham Norfolk. Married ABT 1843 King's Lynn. Their children were:
1: Francis Dodman b. ABT 1841
2: Ann Osbiston b. ABT 1844 King's Lynn
3: Jane b. 1845, married to Edward Nicoll Randall
4: Sarah b. 1848, married to Thomas George Garner
5: Samuel b. 1854 - d. 1935, married to Jane Pratt & Charlotte H Souuthgate
6: Hannah b. 1858 - d. 1934, married to Herbert William Southgate b. 1857 - d. 1926
7: Thomas Henry b. 1860 - d. 1914, married to Emily Louisa Kite
8: Francis William b. 1862, married Mary Amelia Eldred

From Jane to Francis William all the children were born South Raynham.

I believe Francis Osbistone 1804 drops the " E ", at the " End ", of his name at the time of marriaged &, all the children have the name " Osbiston " , except Francis Dodman of course.

Ann Dodman R.I.P. - St. Martin's, South Raynham, Norfolk.

Quuestions: 1: Is this Ann Dodman the dauughter of Nicholas & Mary Pilgrim?
2: Francis Dodman b. ABT 1841, could a father be found for him?

It looks as though Francis accepted Francis jnr as his son?
Birth registered:
Sep 1840
Osbiston Francis Dodman Kings Lynn 13 170

And on the 1841 census they are listed as

Francis Osbiston 35
Francis Osbiston 1
Ann Dodman 20

so it looks to me as though the parents just married after the birth but fatherhood was accepted.

" Thank You ALL " for these repies, what is happening here is we are tied up between Thomas Dodman & Mary Laws, Thomas is a younger brother to Nicholas married to Mary Pilgrim. Nicholas & Mary are my direct line of lineage. Their children were: 1: David b. ABT 1818 Snettisham - d. ? , 2: Mary Ann b. ABT 1819 Snettisham - d. ?, 3: William b. 1821 Snettisham - d. 1875 Thamesville, Kent County Ontario Canada, married to Mary Degan ( ? ), William & Mary R.I.P. Sherman Cemetery, Thamesvillie, Kent County,Ontario. The dates on their headstone do not match up with William though, 4: John b. 1825 Snettisham - d. 1907 Bothwell Kent County Zone Twp. On., Canada, married to Mary Jane McKay, John & Mary Jane R.I.P. Mayhew Cemetery
Thamesville, Kent County,On., Canada, 5: Avis b. 1829 Snettisham - d. Hamilton On., Canada, married to Mark Robinson, 6: Elizabeth b. 1830 Snettisham - d. 1847 Oxford County, Blenheim District, On., Canada, married to William Broderick, 7: Nicholas Jnr. b. 1834 Snettisham - d. ? King's Lynn Norfolk Eng.

Nicholas & Mary were married Nov. 30th 1815, Snettisham, Parish Fring.

As for Francis Dodman Osbiston, Dodman is his middle name, I believe.

Once again: THANK YOU FOR " ALL THE HARD WORK " , we are just getting mixed up, between 2 different famillies!!!!!!! Both living in Snettisham at the same time!!!!!

In the matter of Francis Dodman Osbiston, it is still not clear to me if, Francis was born a Dodman before the marriage to Francis Osbiston or not. I have no records stating this, nor have I researched this.

" BUT ", in the matter of Ann Dodman b. ABT 1821 , I may have some insight about her. In the familly of William Dodman b. 1779 - d. 1851 married to Elizabeth Gould b. 1786 - d. 1876 had
7 children, they were: 1: Sarah b. 1810 - d. ?, 2:George b. 1813 - d. 1864 married to Ann Wetts b. 1814 - d. 1894, 3:Elizabeth b. 1815- d. ?, 4: Thomas b. 1817 - d. ?, 5: * ANN B. 1820- D. ?,
6: John b. 1822 - d. ?, 7: Susan b. 1824 - d. ?

" * ANN DODMAN b. 1820 of this familly, could be the person we are very well talking about!!!!!!!!! " This Ann fits everything we have discussed so far, right down to birthdate & age!!!!!!!!!!

After researching I have found this out about this Ann Dodman b. 1819 - d. 1 Dec 1894. Her parents were John Dodman b. 1732 - d. 1799 & Ann Sapey b. 1736. I believe we are in the area of Fakenham & Helhoughton, Norfolk. As far as I can figure out Ann was married to 5 different men. Francis Osbiston, who was married to Sarah Brown 1st. Issac Watson, who left for Northern Cape, South Africa with her & some of their children, if this is so Ann & Issac die here. William Mitchley. John White Seppings & Robert Chapman.

I have found this Ann Dodman before not reallizing who she was or from whom her parents were. And I have a big problem with her!!!!!! During her marriage with Francis Osbiston & Issac Watson, the dates of children being born coincide with each other, from each marriage. Meaning as if she was married to these 2 men at the same time!!!!!!! Unless Ann got away with
" Polygamy!!!!!!!! " This is a riddle I can not explain, if my findings are RIGHT.

Children of Ann Dodman b. 1819 - d. 1 Dec 1894 & Issac Watson b. 1818: 1: Polly b. 1842 - d. ?, 2: John b. 1842 - d. ?, 3: Frederick b. 1843 - d. ?, 4: Issac b. 1845 - d. ?,
5: William b. 1849 - d. ?, 6: Harriott b. 1850 - d. ?, 7: Louisa b. 1852 - d. 1945, 8: George b. 1854 - d. 1938, 9: Emma b. 1857 - d. ? 10: Ellen b. 1859 - d. ?, 11: Mary Ann b. 1862 - d. ? As I have
stated the dates in this marrige coincide withe dates in the marriage with Francis Osbiston & we are talking about the same people!!!!!!!!

So I ask - " WHAT IS GOING ON? "

I don't understand why you think that this is what happened. As far as I can see after a brief look:

1) Ann Dodman (father John Dodman, labourer) married Francis Osbiston 08 Jun 1843
Francis seems to have accepted that he was the father of a baby born before the marriage (Francis Dodman Osbiston).

1851
South Rainham

Francis Osbiston 47
Ann Osbiston 33
Francis Osbiston 10
Ann Osbiston 7
Jane Osbiston 5
Sarah Osbiston 3

1861
South Rainham

Francis Osbiston 57
Ann Osbiston 42
Sarah Osbiston 13
Samuel Osbiston 7
Hannah Osbiston 3
Thomas Henry Osbiston 8 Months

2) Mary Ann Dodman (father John Dodman, wheelwright) married Isaac Watson 06 Jan 1842
http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchRes ... rdID=71510

1851
Shipdham

Isaac Watson 33
Mary Ann Watson 32
Fredrick Watson 8
Isaac Watson 6
William W Watson 2
Harriott Watson 1

1861
Shipdham

Isaac Watson 45
Mary A Watson 42
Fredk Watson 18
Isaac Watson 16
William W Watson 12
Harriott Watson 11
Louisa Watson 9
George Watson 7
Emma Watson 4
Ellen Watson 2

This might be Mary Ann in 1841
Gressenhall

John Dodman 45
Maryann Dodman 40
Mary Dodman 20
George Dodman 20
Margaret Dodman 15
John Dodman 13
Martin Dodman 12
Elizabeth Dodman 10
Eliza Dodman 8
Ellen Dodman 4
Thomas Dodman 1

John Dodman is down as a publican here. One of the witnesses to Mary Ann marriage in 1842 was Louisa Dodman who is not with the family in 1841 (off being a servant) but her baptism is probably this one

County Norfolk
Place Gressenhall
Church St Mary the Virgin
RegisterNumber 196
DateOfBirth
BaptismDate 24 Apr 1822
Forename Louisa
Sex F
FatherForename John
MotherForename Mary Ann
FatherSurname DODMAN
MotherSurname
Abode Gressenhall
FatherOccupation Wheelwright

and this is Mary Ann's
County Norfolk
Place Gressenhall
Church St Mary the Virgin
RegisterNumber 107
DateOfBirth
BaptismDate 09 Sep 1818
Forename Mary Ann
Sex F
FatherForename John
MotherForename Mary Ann
FatherSurname DODMAN
MotherSurname
Abode Gressenhall
FatherOccupation Wheelwright

with the list seeming to fit the 1841 census well
1 Baptisms 09 Sep 1818 DODMAN Mary Ann Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
2 Baptisms 06 Jul 1820 DODMAN George Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
3 Baptisms 24 Apr 1822 DODMAN Louisa Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
4 Baptisms 08 Dec 1824 DODMAN Margaret Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
5 Baptisms 10 Feb 1828 DODMAN John Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
6 Baptisms 25 Oct 1829 DODMAN Martin Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
7 Baptisms 25 Dec 1831 DODMAN Elizabeth Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
8 Baptisms 24 Nov 1833 DODMAN Eliza Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname
9 Baptisms 25 Sep 1836 DODMAN Ellen Norfolk Gressenhall Father Surname

So given that you have Ann Dodman in 1841 in same household as her future husband, and Mary Ann Dodman at home with her own family in 1841 I don't see any reason to think bigamy was involved.
