Archive tbc..........Are these two baptisms the same person!

Postby jo. » Tue Oct 02, 2012 9:35 pm

I pondered whether these are actually the same person!

Mary Paul
Baptised 22 Aug 1831
Father Richard
Mother Ann

Mary Paul
Baptised 26 May 1833
Father Richard
Mother Ann
Notes, Aged 4 years

Both baptised at St Augustine s West Monkton Somerset!

I found this, when I was looking for Mary Paull who married Abraham Parsons 24th Feb 1852 at the same church..

Her Dad was Richard Paull

I took a look through the Census's and found a Richard Paull, who had his census corrected to read Paul!

So making the assumption that A, Both Baptism's are the same child, and B, That it's the Same Mary Paull that I'm looking for!

But is it likely my assumption is correct?

It is this family then Jo:-

1841 West Monkton
Name Age
Ricd Pall 30 Ag Labourer
William Pall 14
Sarah Pall 12
Mary Pall 9
Charlotte Pall 6
James Pall 4
All born in County

I don't know about the two baps, you really need to view the Parish Register, see if there are any burials for a Mary Paul?

Looks like Paul is a Somerset name then, lots of them on the Census.

Two baptisms were not unusual.

If a child was sickly at birth they would have a quick baptism to ensure the soul goes to heaven if it dies.

The "emergency"baptism might not have other members of the family or godparents attending.

When the child is older and stronger then another baptism is held so that members of the congregation, family, friends can attend.

Some more information...

Joseph Paul
Buried 20 Nov 1831 aged 4 Months

This is the twin brother of the fist Mary Paul..

So wonder if the Second Mary Paul is re-christened in 1833 as Mark suggested!

I've done some digging around in the Censuses...

And it seem's the Abode, is the cottage you live not a village address..

As my 2XGreat Granddad, lived in cottages called 'Woodballs' which still stands today, and it's this that's listed on one of the christenings, and in the census..

But I know that residents did move around the local farms, as it seem's that my Great grandparents did, several addresses in the area, plus a swap with parents!

Sometimes when you look at the actual church record the second "baptism" turns out to be recorded as "received into the church" which means that the baptism was in a private home and the baby was later admitted into the local church. Baptising twice isn't really part of the system although it did happen sometimes in different churches. It shouldn't have happened in a small parish, though I suppose it might.

Gotton and Woodballs are next to each other in the census routes so it could be that the two groups that Pete found are just one set of parents giving a different address. Bit odd though that Mary is said to be 4 in 1833 if her twin died age 4 months in Nov 1831.

Joseph and Mary baptised 1831 may not have been twins, just baptised the same day. Yes an abode is a home Jo and Ag Labourers did move around from Farm to Farm and from Parish to Parish, so the baptisms may not just be at West Monkton, where are they in 1851 and 1861 :?: Linell.
