Pheasant Wood - The Lost Diggers From Fromelles

Postby MarkCDodd » Sat Nov 07, 2009 4:48 am

This is one of the battles of WWI that makes me angry and frustrated and proud.

Angry that the stupidity of the English Commanders cost so many UK and Australian lives.

Frustrated that Australia has a fixation on Gallipoli and few know the superb job our men did on the European front.

Proud that our force of volunteers attempted the impossible whilst questioning the wisom of it all.

A few months ago I was contacted by one of the volunteers trying to identify the soldiers in the recently uncovered mass grave.

He had been looking at sites like Ancestry and searching online tree to find relatives who could provide DNA.

My wife was more than happy to do so but our soldier is yet to be found.

This link points to an excellent dedication to these young men.

Hi Mark,

I found it very moving reading about the stories of the soldiers and angry at yet another example of the gross stupidity of our so called leaders. I just couldn't stop shaking my head when reading what they were made to do which was identical to a previous British assault that had ended in carnage. "Lions led by donkeys" was a term used often and so true.

I hope your search is successful and many thanks for sharing your post.

Regards
Adrian
