K.I.A.WW1...George WESTON

Postby sparkstopper » Sat Oct 24, 2009 11:17 am

Hi. Ap....Looking for info: on George WESTON b.abt 1884. He was supposed to have been
killed in the last year of WW1. This info. was given to me by my Aunt who died last year
at the age of 101...so I do not know how accurate it is: His brother (My Grandfather) Samuel
served with the S.Staffs Reg. and came through the war. At the time of 1911 he was living with
wife(Laura) and family in Foxoak Street, Cradley Heath.....The only possible I have, was serving with
the R.Warks.Reg.......Any further help would be very much appreciated. Regards Derek.

Hi Derek,

I've just looked at the George Weston of the Royal Warwick' Regiment you mentioned and found out a little more information which doesn't seem to fit your George but at least you can eliminate him from your research:

Name: George Weston
Birth Place: Liverpool
Residence: Liverpool
Death Date: 12 Apr 1918
Rank: Private
Regiment: Royal Warwickshire Regiment
Battalion: 2/7th Battalion.
Number: 267196
Type of Casualty: Killed in action
Comments: Formerly 4599, Liverpool Regt.

I'll have a root around and see what I can find but I'm sure some of the other members will also be able to help.

Hi Derek,

I've searched the pension records for your George Weston but with no luck however the service records haven't been transcribed yet onto the web for the surnames N-Z yet so it's possible George's records may have suvived but I'm unable to check yet, however I will check them when they're available.

I can only find one possible entry for the death of George Weston which is a real possible connection with your relative:

Name: George Weston
Birth Place: Quarry Bank, Staffs
Residence: Dudley, Worcs
Death Date: 18 Sep 1916
Enlistment Location: Cradley Heath, Staffs
Rank: Private
Regiment: Worcestershire Regiment
Battalion: 4th Battalion.
Number: 16431
Type of Casualty: Killed in action

I'm sure your Auntie wouldn't have been confused about George being killed during the war but maybe she was confused about the date of his death and the above birth and residence details match but on the CWGC website it doesn't give any details on family or address of deceased. This usually meant that no next of kin or close relative responded to the request for personnel details on the soldier and the reason for this was usually that the soldier had no living next of kin.

The problem is without the CWGC pesonnel details or any records to cross reference I can't be 100% sure however I couldn't see any other George Weston born around that time in Dudley area that would fit the death entry above.

What do you think?

Regards

Cheers Ap...Looks like you may have 'hit the nail on the head' with this last one,
as his place of residence on 1901 census was Lower High St. Quarry Bank, although
1911 states living in Cradley Heath, younger brother john was born in Quarry Bank..
I presume it doesn't give an age with this info: Anyway I appreciate the effort
and any other info: at a later date. Regards Derek.

Hi Derek,

The service records have been completed and are online to view which is the good news but the bad news is I've checked for George's service records but no luck I'm afraid so it looks like they were destroyed during the Blitz which sadly makes it impossible to confirm the details already given.

Maybe if Mark reads this he could double check the records just in case I've missed anything.

Bad news but you're not alone I was searching for four Great Great Uncles but only found one so I'm unable to confirm at least three relatives details.

Thanks for your efforts Adrian: But I think that the Worcs.Reg.one could
be him...right birth place, enlistment area, & residing area.....but I will
keep an open mind....nothing is 100% in genealogy. Cheers Derek.

There are 117 sets of War Records for George Weston.....

None of them are for this George.

He is not listed in De Ruvigny's or the National Roll Of Honour.

Out of luck with this one....
