Hi,

I found this:

Medal Index Card
Samuel Yates
Regiment: South Staffs
Reg No: 2492, 202328
Rank: Pte
Medals:
1915 Star
British & Victory
Date entered: 28/6/15
Demobbed: 22/3/19

The two Reg No issued would suggest he was most likely a reservist or maybe had been a professional soldier prior 1914 because later on in the war new Reg no were issued to existing serving soldiers.

These links will help explain the re-numbering:

http://www.1914-1918.net/renumbering.htm

http://www.1914-1918.net/TF_renumbering_infantry.htm

I'll attempted to find out more information if possible.

Adrian

Hi,

I'm not 100% sure but looking at the information:

Reg No
200001 - 240000
Btn
5
Regiment
South Staffordshire Regt

Samuel's new number 202328 falls between the above so indicates he derved within the 5th Battalion.

There were two Territorial Battalions 1/5 and 2/5

1/5th Battalion
August 1914 : in Walsall. Part of Staffordshire Brigade in North Midland Division. Moved to Luton area and in November 1914 went on to Bishops Stortford.
Landed at Le Havre 3 March 1915.
12 May 1915 : formation became the 137th Brigade, 46th (North Midland) Division.
January 1916 : moved to Egypt, returning to France next month

2/5th Battalion
Formed at Walsall in September 1914 as a home service ("second line") unit. Became part of 2nd Staffordshire Brigade in 2nd North Midland Division. Moved to Luton area by January 1915 and in July went on to St Albans.
Moved to Ireland in April 1916 to quell disturbances.
August 1915 : formation became the 176th Brigade, 59th (2nd North Midland) Division.
Moved in January 1917 to Fovant and landed at Le Havre 25 February 1917.
30 January 1918 : disbanded in France.

It's possible Samuel served with one of the above but I maybe way off the mark :o .

Hi,

Ok I've found his service records and I was spot on (not just a pretty face  ) he did indeed serve with the 1/5th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. My other hunch was also correct he was indeed a reservist previously serving with the Territorial Battalion 2/6th which was based at Wolverhampton. He signed a formal document to serve overseas dated 25th May 1915. He was only commited to serving within the UK and he couldn't have been forced to serve overseas.

Joined for duty: 26th August 1914 at Wolverhampton
Regiment: 2/6th Battalion South Staffs (Reg no. 2492)
Embarked France: 28/6/15
Hospital: England 15/6/16 - 10/10/16 sickness (bladder)
Transfered: 11/10/16 1/5th Battalion South Staffs (Reg no. 202328 )
Embarked France 11/10/16
Wounded: 6/1/18 Gunshot wound (slight)
Back to duty: 13/1/18
Leave to England: 19/1/18 - 2/2/18
Demobbed: 22/3/19

A letter is on his file from him requesting that no monies be sent to his wife whom he accuses of being imorral and neglecting their child (wife seems to be living in a Lodging House in St Albans).

Kind regards

Hi Mandy,

Yes the only child mentioned is Mary but very odd set up

Samuel's service records states the marriage information:

Edith Jane Burgess spinster married Samuel Yates 22/4/11 Staffordshire

Mary Burgess Bapt' 15/3/10

The writing is faded over time but the above is correct and seems to me Mary was born out of wedlock given the date and surname. On Samuel's service records it gives Mrs Alice Fletcher of Mill Lane, Long Lake, Tettenhall guardian of child.

The letter requesting stopping of child payments to the mother also requests Alice Fletcher be given the money to support the child in her care.

I've checked the Black country connections link you gave for Samuel and his wife is given Elizabeth Whale.

The service record details I gave for Samuel Reg No: 2492, 202328 is the same but I'm not sure if it is the same person you think he is ?

This isn't my area but seems odd ?

It's possible this Alice Fletcher is a relation of Samuel's which may help confirm if you have the correct person. It also maybe an idea to trace the marriage entry mentioned above.

Hi Mandy,

I don't think this is the same person you have on the BCC because Samuel is living on the 1891 and 1901 census in Long Lake, Tettenhall with his Grandfather James & Frances. Interestingly on the 1891 census one of his Aunts is Alice Yates and I found a marriage entry:

Wolverhampton
Oct - Nov - Dec 1892
William Fletcher & Alice Yates

I hope this helps.
