Looking at my notes I have Thomas Ashmore in the 1911 census boarding with his brother John in the home of their cousin Edwin Ashmore at Wall Heath Kingswinford..
Thomas is down as a boiler yard labourer.

I saw that entry on ancestry but dismissed it because of the mothers name Mary not Isabella.
My mum can't remember anything about her uncle John.

37 Delph has Plants living there in the census. I'm sure I saw Plants and Ashmores in the same household but now I can't find them.
Sorry if I have confused you even more Nessa!

Hi,

This is proving tricky to work because it seems we have two sets of Thomas and John's born abot the same time in the same area but let's look at what we know from nessa:

Nessa

1911 census
67 Delph, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire
John Ashmore
Age 45
Isabbelle Ashmore
Age 46
William Ashmore
Age 21
Albert Ashmore
Age 18
Ellen Ashmore
Age 15
Phoebe Ashmore
Age 14
Annie Ashmore
Age 10

We can confirm the above family is nessa's ancestors but no Thomas or John ?

I think gardener is right that the Thomas and John you have as your ancestors living with Edwin Ashmore are in fact not yours because your relatives John & Isabella never had a son called Edwin. I'm not sure about the cousin Edwin you mention but on the 1911 census Edwin lists Thomas and John as his brothers/lodgers.

John found by gardener serving with South Staffordshire Regiment on the 1911 census and Thomas in the Worcestershire Regiment I found on the 1911 census are your relatives and sons of John and Isabella.

I've found this on the 1911 census :
No 8 Bradley Street, Pensnett Nr Dudley
Edwin Thomas Ashmore
45
Mary Ashmore
46
Ammey Ashmore
17
Mary Ann Bate
86

This is the family of Edwin who is married on the 1911 census and living with him are his brothers John and Thomas, it states on the census brothers and crossed out lodgers but was most likely Edwin was unsure what they should be classed on the form. I think this helps confirm that you have the wrong relatives listed on the 1911 census and in fact both your Thomas and John had already enlisted in the army.

What do you think ?

Hi Northern Lass,

I think I'm on the right track but a little more time is needed to work out the evidence we have and are uncovering because I feel we can crack this one.

Interested to get some feed back on what we have so far and if it makes sense.

The two familes mention don't seem to be related because the heads were born in different places eg Thomas or Edwin Thomas in Stoke, Northumberland and John in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, England.

I'm enjoying this

Regards

Hi,

Just looked at the service records of John Ashmore gardener had found and it must be your John and the mothers name of Mary must have been incorrectly written because all the siblings listed match and even the address of 37 Delph Lane fits almost perfectly with the last known address of the family on the 1911 census 67 Delph.

One of the witnesses listed is Nellie Ashmore another indication this is your John.

It's seems to be all adding up.

I have just checked on John and Isabellamarriage to see if John was married before to someone called Mary but his is down as a bachelor. My mother can't remember her grandmother linked with the name Mary. With regards to Edwin Ashmore he married at Stoke Saint Milborough Shropshire I wondered if it was mis transcribed as Middlesborough Northumberland.

I am making a large tree for the Ashmore family on paper to sort them out they all are descendants of Enoch and Mary Ashmore 1784 - 1871 some of his sons left Elmley Lovett and moved to Cradley and Sedgley around 1860/70's. My 2 x g grandfather moved to Crafley.
