Hi,

I'm not sure what information your require but his service records are available and I could give a little more information if required. The date of his death given on his grave Dec 1916 is incorrect because from his records that was the date he enlisted. He must have died of illness/ accident because he never served overseas. The 3rd Battalion South Staffordshires was the home Battalion based at Lichfield and never served abroad and looking at his service records he enlisted in 1916 but wasn't mobilized until 19th June 1918.

He was discharged to the reserves 8th February 1919 but still must have qualified for the military criteria of soldiers killed or died due to the war.

Regards
Adrian

Hi,

He died on the 02/12/1919 and his death is listed:

England and Wales death index 1916-2006
Name:
Ernest Levett
Birth Date:
abt 1887
Date of Registration:
Oct-Nov-Dec 1919
Age at Death:
32
Registration District:
Dudley
Inferred County:
Worcestershire
Volume:
6b
Page:
884

The information listed on service records:

Ernest Levett married Betrice Taylor (spinster) 25th Oct 1908, Rowley Regis

children
Lizzie 5th Feb 1909 Rowley Regis
Herbert 15th May 1911 Rowley Regis
Annie 6th Jun 1913 Rowley Regis
Elsie 5th Feb 1916 Rowley Regis

Interestingly on his statement to disabilities completed prior to discharge (6 months previous to his death) he claims no issues or disabilites so what caused his death i wonder. Maybe some kind of accident ?

The date given on his grave stone is incorrect and looks to me like the date he enlisted.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Gosh I could have sworn it said 1916 but of course looking closer you're spot on.

I think I'll have to mix more water with the scotch

Take care
