This was James Gallagher 1831 -1894 from Ireland- this is in a friends tree trying to find more about him can anyone tell what regiment or rank?He married Fanny Burke can`t find marriage? she shows in 1901 census SAWKINS, John Head Married M 34 1867 Malt Roaster England SAWKINS, Susan Wife Married F 28 1873 Laundress Ireland SAWKINS, Rosina M Daughter F 0 (9 MONTHS) 1901 Glasgow, Lanarkshire GALLAHER, Fanny Mother-In-Law Widow F 58 1843 Housekeeper Ireland GALLAHER, Sarah Relative Single F 24 1877 Shop Keeper Ireland 22, William Street, Glasgow Lanarkshire Thanks RF PS I might have posted in wrong place please amend

6 on helmet could be 6th inniskilling dragoons or 6th dragoon guards (carabiniers)

RF my hubby says:-

Looks like a Trooper ie Private
Not Commisioned
The helmet gives it away as you can see Life Guard crest.

This is a possible connection with your chap:
Name:James GALLAGHER
Year of birth: 1829
Place of birth: High Church, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Regiment: 2nd Regiment Of Life Guards

I'm afraid I don't have any details of wife etc but he enlisted in 1847 and served 23 years (all at home)and was discharged in 1871.

If this is your chap I have a little more information.

The dates and Regiment seems to fit but not the place of birth.

This website would know for sure the details regarding the uniform and I dare say lots more on the history of the Regiment. It would be great if you could let us know if you get a response ( I'm confident you will )

Sorry I didn't notice this thread before. He is wearing one of the easiest to recognise uniforms in the Army. Especially with that brass helmet. He is in the Dragoon Guards!

Having a quick look...he was in India for a couple of years.

Got primary and then secondary syphilis. No gonorrhea which is amazing if he played "hide the sausage" with Indian prostitutes.
