I am trying to find out more about my great grandfather Thomas William John Merritt

Does anyone know what military uniform this is, from his military card he was in the 2nd South Lancashire regiment and was given the 1914 Star and he was also entitled to the 14 Star and Clasp.
He was later in the RASC (Royal Army Service Corps) so maybe the uniform he is wearing is the RASC.

On his marriage certificate it says he was at the Signalling School in Blundell Sand, Liverpool, and that was in 1917. His regiment number with South Lancashire regiment was 8833, and he was a private. And when he joined the RASC his number was M/41479.

picture looks like he has signal flag on the sleeves so i would asume that there uniform ? i might be wrong unless he was still in the south lancs and wore the cross flags on his sleeve to show he was attached from the signal corps ?
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

He was given the 14 Star as he entered the European theatre of war before 1915.

The J/1/7 refers to the Medal Roll in which you will find the entry for his 14 Star. Page 95 is the specific page in the Medal Roll you will find his entry.

The naming of the medal Roll sometimes give a clue as to the regiment a soldier was in but quite often it is generic, such as "J/1/7".

The next two medals were awarded for his service in the RASC.

The clasp will be for a particular battle and as you can see, it was awarded well after the end of the war.

Sometimes they had to argue for a battle or action to be recognised so often a clasp is issued well after the battle was fought.

Generally, medals are for a campaign, clasps are for particular battles in that campaign.

You can see the Medal Rolls at Kew but usually they only list the address the medals are to be sent to. Sometimes they have additional information such as next of kin etc
