Hi,

I have a little more information that maybe of interest:

Joseph enlisted 10th November 1914 and first went to France 24th August 1915. He was also issued with the 1915 Star medal extra to the two you mentioned (British & Victory medals).

I'm not 100% sure but Joseph may have served with the:

South Staffordshire Regiment
9th (Service) Battalion (Pioneers)
Formed at Lichfield in September 1914 as part of K3. Moved to Aldershot and in December 1914 went into Talavera Barracks.
Attached as Army Troops to 23rd Division, and became Pioneer Bn December 1914. Moved to Shorncliffe in March 1915 and went on in May to Oxney Park (Bordon).
Landed at Boulogne 24 August 1915

The date the Battalion went over to France matches exact the date listed on Joseph's medal index card so it's possible.

Regards
Adrian

Hi
I've received some info from relations that grandad Joseph Thornton was injured during the WW1
Dad was always told he was shot in the arm by a sniper, Dads aunties told us he was shot in the arm by his mate whose gun went off while cleaning his rifle oops !!

Any chance anyone can view any medical info on Joseph service records

Thanks in advance x

Hi,

I'm afraid Joseph's pension/service records were destroyed during the Blitz (around 60% of records were sadly destroyed) so it's highly unlikely any other documents would give you the information required.

The information listed on his silver war badge entry:

He enlisted 10th November 1914 and was discharged to class P army reserves 14th April 1917.

This link explains the criteria for the army reserves list:
