I can look up anything on scotlandspeople.gov.uk , even modern records that you can't view online. I go about once a month with a long list! Happy to add a few more.

Thanks from me too Kay for the very kind offer. I will definitely be contacting you as I have some people who were born in Scotland and ended up in Canada.

thank you very much! if you go again could you possibly find my elusive ancestor for me? finlay maclean born around 1795 last place I found him was in gravir, lochs, isle of lewis also tried garyvard he wed Margaret macdonald sorry don't know when but his son donald was born in 1815 in gravir , lochs.
I had trouble getting Donald his son in the end I contacted a nice lady in stornoway library and she helped me but there are so many macleans on the isle of lewis.
I hope you can help with finlay? would be so grateful. kim.

Hi Kim
This is going back before statutory registration in 1855 in Scotland which I am sure you know. You are doing well to get this far back!
Where have you looked already? I am having a look on 1841 census on http://freecen.rootsweb.com and can see some Mcleans in Graver

Piece: SCT1841/87 Place: Lochs -Ross and Cromarty Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Lochs Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 5 Page: 13
Address: Graver
Kenneth McLean 40 small tenant & fisherman
Margaret 40
Donald 20 fisherman
Christian 15
Henrietta 15
Malcolm 8
Kenneth 3

I can have a look at the original in case Kenneth is wrongly transcribed!
There are a couple of Finlay Macleans but not in Graver and neither a good fit.

I had a look at the original 1841 census and it is clearly Kenneth. I can't think what else to suggest. :(
