finding John Horton

I would like to know how I go about finding details of my grandfather he was in the army before the first ww and when the war started he was still in the army but transferred to the air flying corps, I would also like to know how I would go about getting any medals he was due. He died in 1923 his wife had died in 1922 so I really don't know if he actually got his medals. I know he was born and lived in St Helens upto joining the forces and was married to Annie Tyrer. he was born in St Helens lancashire in 1883
