I've been trying to find my grandfather's military records and have drawn a complete blank and I hope someone can give me some guidance. His name was William Parry, born in 1896 in Abergavenny. I know he served in WW1, I believe in the 1st Mons and he was engaged in the battle of the Somme. I can't find any record using William Parry, W. Parry or Bill Parry.
My father too. He served in the Signals in WW2 and I can't find him either!

Hi

There is this one. You might need to pay extra to see it and I don't know if it is him or not. Seven miles from Abergavenny. There is a health-related record on there for this soldier too. It gives his age as 21 years and 338 days when examined on 9 May 1918. If you can work that out and see if it fits his birthday :-)

Name: William Parry
Gender: Male
Rank: Pte
Record Type: Disability
Birth Date: 1896
Residence Place: Blaenavon
Military Service Region: Wales, Wales
Military Country: Wales
Discharge Date: 10 Jan 1919
Service Number: 60060
Corps, Regiment or Unit: Mon's

Many of the official service WWI records were destroyed in bombing raids in WWII so records are sparse, but if you have any idea of the regiments they served in you could try approaching them directly. I've also found the Great War Forum useful.

Thanks so much! I'm pretty sure it's him, the birth date being just 1 day out. I've seen this one and dismissed it because as far as I'm aware he never lived in Blaenavon.

What was his occupation before he joined up, do you know?

I don't know. I can't find him on the 1911 census for sure. The only one I've found that there's a small possibility is a 'waggoner's boy'. He became a postman when he left the army.
