Hi there,
I have just traced my Father's line back to Joshua Collins who is described as a soldier in his parish register entry for his marriage to Mary Morton in Sherborne, Dorset on 13 Oct 1767. There is also a later burial for Joshua Collins in Sherborne which gives his age as 83 on 30 Sep 1813 which would make his year of birth around 1730.
I have read information online about soldiers of this period being known as 'Redcoats' and discussion about their motivation for joining the military but does anyone know if there is information relating to individuals in this period that might help me find out more about his life.
Many thanks,
Gill

The Somerset & Dorset Family History Society have premises in Sherborne and there is a small museum. Either may be able to help or point you towards other sources.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.
