I wondered if any of you good people could add any detail to my grandad's war records

RA 11/3/37- 2/9/45
Have some more service records of rank promotions , discharges etc but a bit lengthy.
I know he was at the Somme because I have a letter written to his mother from the Somme but I know nothing really about any action he saw or which campaigns he was involved with.
I think he was injured out at some point to but returned but can't remember where this came from.

If anyone is interested I can scan his MOD service record that was s ent to me in 1995 . I've no idea if more info is readuily available today.

Would love to hear anything you can find.
Thanks
CArol

Hi Carol,

You have most of the information regarding your Grandfather during the war that I can only suggest you purchase his Battalions war diaries which may well mention him by name given he received the MC (with bar) and was also an officer. The war diaries will give you a day by day account of his activities and well worth the £3.36.

You will need to set up an account with the National Archives (easy and free)
Link to purchase:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.u ... i=C7355333

I believe he served with the 2/7th Btn when receiving his MC (with bar) 1st Nov 1918. (see above )

I believe that when he re-enlisted he lost his rank of Captain but because the rank of Captain and above could be still used after leaving the army he may well have re-applyed to use it after his name. I'm not sure but that's my guess.

This link has Oct war diaries for the 2/7th that someone kindly posted:

You will need to register to view but this is free and easy to do, also an excellent site to use.

Take care
Adrian

Hi Adrian

That is brilliant- thank you - I didn't know you could do that or that they were available. I will certainly follow that up and let you know how it goes. Thank you for the links. I will be out this evening but will sit down and have a good read tomorrow.

The information I have on grandad is from a typed letter from the MOD and notes from my brother. I haven't actually seen any orginal documents apart from teh medal index cards on ancestry.com. Is it possible to see service records anywhere in their original format. (Like the ones Mally has kindly sent me for Boon)

I am really hoping someone maybe able to help me. I signed up for the forces war records web site paying what I thought was a one off £7.00 fee for a weekend and several months later realised they were still taking my DD payment. I tried to cancel it and thought I had , so a couple of months later I cancelled it again as they were still taking it. Now they have sent me an email telling me they have just added a record for Charles Henry Chamberlain and would I like to visit their site- well the answer is definitely NO in case they resurrect my account again but I am curious.....
I wonder if anyone has membership they are actively using to see what the following is all about?
"Click the button below to view the newest record for C H Chamberlain (rank: Bombardier and unit Royal Field Artillery). This record is from our Military Hospitals Admissions and Discharge Registers WW1 collection."
