Boxing

Postby mezentia » Mon Jul 06, 2009 9:11 pm

One of my ancesters-in-law was a boxer, Sam Sherwood. He seems to have made up in "enthusiasm" for what he lacked in finesse  I would appreciate any information any Black Country boxing historian might have about any of his bouts. I do have images of write-ups of his fights from the Boxing magazine, but I would love images of posters where he's mentioned, either as a contestant or promoter.

TIA

Hi Mezantia.
Is this the Sam Sherwood from Dudley who was a fighter in the 1920's ?
The name rings a bell.I'm sure i must have read about him in The Black Country Bugle.
If i get time i'll have look through my back copies they may have his ring record in there.

took some getting on this sight but found this

http://www.prewarboxing.co.uk/boxers.htm

Sam Sherwood(Dudley) total bouts 10 active 1920s to 1920s

also these two wonder if they were relatives ?

Bill Sherwood(Walsall) total bouts 19 active 1910s to 1910s
Jim Sherwood(Tipton) total bouts 20 active 1920s to 1930s
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Northern Lass, Peter, Rob

Thanks for the replies. I've already been in touch with the chap who runs prewarboxing.co.uk - that's where I got the descriptions from of the bouts I know about. I know Sam was also a promoter as I've seen posters with his name on, unfortunately I can't get copies yet as the person who has them is a little reluctant to let me have them to scan :( . I couldn't find anything about Sam on the Bugle website - I'll maybe try contacting them direct. Google only returns the prewarboxing site, so I was hoping that there's maybe someone a little more local who might have some information.
