Please Help to Save St John's Kates Hill

Postby linell » Tue Mar 08, 2011 8:44 am

This is such a worthwhile cause helping to preserve St John's Church, I know many of us have ancestors buried there:-

Ask around your friends and family and collect used printer ink cartridges, unwanted mobile telephones, loose change, bits of gold jewellery even if broken
We always need tombola prizes especially bottles, cosmetics and toiletries, biscuits and chocolates, packets of sweets, stationery, gift sets and unwanted gifts. Also clothing, shoes, linens, handbags, soft toys, bric a brac, books and toys.
Organise a fundraising event for us eg a coffee morning, bring and buy, garage sale or anything sponsored.
Recommend us as a cause worthy of support to groups, friends, associations or clubs
Volunteer some of your time
Make regular donations to St John's Church Preservation Group and please do remember us in your will but ensure that the legacy is to St John's Church PRESERVATION GROUP.
Purchase a copy of the 'Tales From A Churchyard, St John's, Kates Hill, Dudley' by Chris Smith available from us on mail order at £8.99 or in person through SJCPG at £7.50. All proceeds from the book go towards Saving St John's Church.

GET IN TOUCH WITH US
At our drop in centre next door to St John's Church in the Old School House. Open Monday to Friday 9.30-4.30pm, we aim to open at weekends as well soon
On Dudley market every Saturday, bring tombola prizes straight there if you wish as we are often very short, also loose change collections or donations

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO IMPROVE AND DEVELOP THE PRESERVATION GROUP

We need more helpers for us to grow and move the Preservation Group on. We've achieved a lot in four years - cleared the grounds, got the church building Grade II listed, raised enough money to start some of the restoration work and opened our drop in centre next door to the church. This has all been done by local volunteers giving their time freely.

Many people have helped, but now we need many more people to come forward and offer more help. Anyone from age 16 can be a helper, and younger children can come with their parents. There's no upper age limit and you don't need to have done anything similar before - none of us had.

We will be running a series of meetings where anyone who would like to know a bit more about becoming a volunteer helper can simply come along to get information, without any obligation whatsoever. The format will be a brief tour of the grounds followed by refreshments, chat and question and answer session in our drop in centre next door to the church. If you are personally unable to help please ask around friends and family and see if anyone else could and send them along - for any further information our email address is [email protected]

You may be surprised at just what a great help you could be, even if you don't have much time.

We are also seeking people on secondments and company taskforces.

The first session is THIS SUNDAY 20th March from 2.30pm until 4pm. Meet at the Lychgate outside the church if the weather is fine, and we'll go straight on the tour, or come to the drop in centre next door if it is raining, signs will be out to show you where to go.

COMMITTEE MEETING

Preservation Group committee meetings are open to guests. We believe in transparency and being welcoming to new ideas and new people.

Next meeting: Tuesday 22nd March, 7.15pm for 7.30pm start. Venue The Ex Servicemen's Club, Hall Street, Dudley. The meeting will finish at 9pm.

Please come and join us, you will be most welcome.

REIKI MASTER OFFERS HELP WITH FUNDRAISING

Reiki Master Michael Wilkes has offered to give three Reiki sessions in our drop in centre on Thursday 24th March. The appointments are 6.30pm, 7.10pm and 7.50pm. The fee will be £10 which will be donated to St John's Church Preservation Group. To book one of the appointments email [email protected] but we do require payment in advance to secure the booking.

This is a chance to receive Reiki at a very low price and at the same time help with our fundraising.

Michael is also one of our regular volunteers.

FM COSMETICS SALE AT THE DROP IN

The drop in centre is available for party plan, and on WEDNESDAY 30TH MARCH AT 7PM it will be the turn of FM COSMETICS. Their website is http://uk2.fmgroup.dega.com.pl/

Ideally timed for Mothers Day on the following Sunday, all the commission from sales on this occasion will be donated to St John's Church Preservation Group.

Please just come along, and bring a friend, refreshments will be provided throughout the evening.

BRAINTEASERS

The Brainteasers quiz and puzzle book, sponsored by local companies and compiled by Chris and Gail Smith of community magazine Village Voice, is now on sale in the following places:

From the Black Country Bugle office on Cradley Heath High Street

From Tiwana in High View Street, Kates Hill

From the Leisure Complex in the Copthorne Hotel, Merry Hill

Priced at just 50p, the whole price comes to us for our funds. 2000 were printed so once sold we should have raised £1000

BUILDING UPDATE

The Lightning Conductor will be completed at around 10am on Monday 21st March subject to weather. You are invited to go along and take pictures as the 'final screws go in' and then have a cuppa in the drop in.

If there is any change to this arrangement Ian Wood the 'Lightning Conductor man' will let us know and we will post it on facebook and on our website.

Other than that, come along and witness the completion of the first step of the restoration.

DRAINS: All new soakaways recommended, plans submitted to St John's Church Steering Group, now awaiting comment from English Heritage and St John's Parochial Church Council.

LYCHGATE RESTORATION: Local fundraising to start plus a bid for some of the cost to Heritage Lottery Fund - they have expressed an interest in seeing a proposal but approve very greatly of local community involvement, the more the better

WATERPROOFING: Drains to be done first, and firm quotes to be obtained for the roof and guttering work following a revision to the works on advice from the drains company

TREES: The eight lime trees along the front of the church have grown too big and are pushing the wall over. Dudley Council will carry out necessary work to curtail the root growth, and repair the wall. This work will not start immediately, but should be completed within twelve months. Various permissions have to be obtained first.

ACCESS TO THE INSIDE OF THE BUILDING: Still no details regarding why insurance cannot be re-instated and we have urged for a speedy response.

FEASIBILITY STUDY: Brief revised to stay within budget and Brownhill Hayward Brown now working on new workplan.
