Churchwardens of Halesowen & Rowley Regis ?

Postby apowell » Mon Feb 21, 2011 8:07 am

Hi,

In my research I came across a list of Churchwardens for a church in the South of England and was wondering if anyone had a list for the Halesowen & Rowley Regis churches.

I'm also wondering if anyone can tell me why and how these Churchwardens were chosen ?

Kind regards
Adrian

My grandfather was church warden or St Andrew's in West Bromwich in the 1960's, as far as I'm aware he was chosen as he was a well respected member of the congregation, who presumably had time for the job! I know that around the time of my parents wedding he was ill, and my father temperarily took over his duties. This caused some confusion as they had a change of vicar at the time, and as my father has the same name as my grandfather, the new vicar thourght it was my father who was the church warden and was suprised at it being such a young man!

Hi Adrian, I did see a list inside the book, 'Halas Halas Halesowen' by F.K. Somers, however there were dozens of pages, an awful lot of Church Wardens/ Vergers etc. Someone on here may have a copy. HTH Linell.

There used to be a copy of Halas, Hales, Halesowen in Halesowen library, for reference only. They may still have it.

I knew that being a squirrel was going to be useful sometime -- even more useful would being a tidy and organised squirrel (which I am not) -- but it is half term and Having spent the morning on the forum I thought I should at least make some effort to start tidying my front room --- I can't keep using having lots of my mother's stuff as the reason it is so untidy!

To cut a long story short -- I walked in and spotted a book that I had inherited from my uncle but have not read yet -- yes --'Halas Halas Halesowen' by F.K. Somers" --- and there is a list of church wardens etc of the parish church -- some gaps but earliest is 1456 amd gaps until 1932 (ie present day when book was written) --- ask away if there are any specific names of interest.

Oh lucky you MG, could you list the names, not all of them, but perhaps the ones from the 1700's to 1840, that would be brilliant, what a find :!: :!: :!:

Hi Maths girl,

Many thanks for the information and yes that book is such a find.

I'm really interested in a few of my family names from the area mentioned and was wondering if you could check if any of these surnames appear pre 1799:

Hadley.
Chambers alias Ireland.
Darby.
Allchurch or Alvechurch.
Littley alias Parsons.
Mole.
Fiddian.

If you are able to check that would be fantastic  and I'm wondering what type of information is covered in the book 'Halas Halas Halesowen' by F.K. Somers' because I would like to order a copy from the net or is it out of print.

Kind regards
Adrian
