History of Melbourne Road, Halesowen

Postby Sally Weeks » Sat Sep 17, 2011 1:58 am

Hi Everyone,
I am after information on Melbourne Road in Halesowen. I have been told that the firm Stewarts & Lloyds built most of the houses in the street for its workers. I am trying to find out when they did this and when they eventually sold them. I was born in number 19 and believed it had been in the family for 100 years, but don't know the truth and would like to find out if possible. If anyone has any info I would really appreciate it.
Regards Sally

I found this on the Black Country History Web Site:-

Description: Re: Coombs Wood Works Housing Scheme. File also includes loose correspondence including: Letters re: intent to increase rent on houses on Melbourne Road, Halesowen, 1920; specification of works to be done in erecting 8 cottages forming a cul-de-sac opposite Oatenfields Farm, 1928.

Hello Sally

Have done an address search in 1911 on Melbourne Road, no numbers though - what name are you looking for ?

:?: Thanks for the replies, the name relating to the house is Rudge. I believe that my Grandparents Harry (b 1875) & Sarah Rudge (b 1874) owned the house but whether they bought it off Stewarts & Lloyds , I don't know they also apparently owned a garage in or near The Rumbow but cannot seem to find any info on that either.
Regards
Sally

Hi Sally I remember the name 'Harry Rudge' my Grandfather used to talk about him, he also worked for Stewarts and Lloyds. Think this is Harry here:-

I went to School with a couple of lads from Melbourne Road, can't put their names on here, but they weren't Rudge.

Hi Guys,
Yes I believe that is them my father was not born until 1914. But if they lived in Rumbow when did they move to Melbourne rd, and that blows away the Idea of the 100 years in Melbourne Rd. Has anyone found anything regarding the motor garage in The Rumbow?
Thanks for all this guys it is very helpful in putting my family history together.

Sally, I grew up in Halesowen and I can't remember a Garage in Rumbow, may have been some old Building that your Harry used to repair Cars in :?: Definitely wasn't anything with a Forecourt and Petrol Pumps. I did have a look through my Halesowen Reference Books, nothing listed there, you would be better off searching the Electoral Rolls to see where they lived.
