The following is from a very helpful leaflet that they (CHAS) produce entitled .....

" Towns and Counties of Sandwell"

Sandwell was formed in 1974 by amalgamating the former
county boroughs of West Bromwich and Warley. The county
boroughs had been formed in 1966 from six old boroughs:

Warley County Borough:

Oldbury

Rowley Regis

Smethwick

West Bromwich County Borough:

Tipton

Wednesbury

West Bromwich

Pre 1974 Counties

Before 1974, the old county system existed. Each county had its own
county council, which was responsible for county-wide matters, such as
highways, and areas which did not have a population large enough to
justify their own local council.

How many people do we know who say they are from Sandwell?

we still said Cheshire
and I still do

I had never heard of Sandwell till I was Google Mapping to see if my Granmothers House was still there and found Sandwell Council Offices instead....

Don't worry Mark, some of us are supposed to live in Sandwell but couldn't tell you exactly where it is. You don't include it on your postal address, there's no Sandwell town centre, or Sandwell high street. I think it was just made up to give someone something to do. I much preferred it when I lived in a Shire (must have been a Hobbit in a previous life)
Mind you that could also be confusing. I lived in both Staffordshire and Worcestershire without actually moving house

i did the same with lancashire and cheshire and i was never asked
