So you Know that your Grandparents are
Timothy Dwyer and Bridget Dawkins
and they married in 1946

Do you not have his Birth Certificate or hers then?

try searching on free bmd for a birth for a Timothy Dwyer
There is one I have just found it .....but you see if you can find it

It will have the mothers name on it.

See if that marriage is on this website
http://www.ukbmdsearch.org.uk/

you could then look it up at the relevant archives

armed with the marriage of your G.parents you will get fathers names for both.
You can then see if there is a marriage for the mothers maiden name and the father on the marriage certificate

or you could send for that birth certificate saying (when you find fathers name) that you only want it if father is a such and such

Thanks folks! I think I'm starting to get a handle on things but....stand by for a silly newb question...

I'm not sure what you mean by 'archives'? I've only been at this for a little over a week, and all online with no previous knowledge of family tree stuff. I'm thinking archives are a physical place I need to visit and look thing up?

It is a bit like a flow diagram

let’s say you are then following your fathers line...

Start with yourself and your Birth certificate-
this will give you your Father's name and Mothers maiden name

Search the Marriage Indexes to find their marriage......get the certificate.
With that marriage info you will get your Fathers age and HIS Father's name

So then it is back to the Birth indexes looking for your Fathers birth entry details same ritual as before.

With your Fathers Birth certif you will hopefully know your Grandfathers name and Grandmothers maiden name
with that search the Marriage Index for your Grandfathers Marriage entry.....same procedure as before.

Now you know the name of your Gt Grandfather................back to the birth indexes searching for your Grandfathers birth entry
armed with Grandfathers birth info now you know your Gt Grandfather name and Gt Grandmothers maiden name
search for their marriage

and so on...

If you know the church and day month year of a marriage you can look up the same information that you would get in a marriage certif
for free at the relevant Local history and archives building. As long as it was a church ceremony and as long as they have the records.
If it was a registry office wedding then you need to order the certifs.

So for eg if I find a marriage in 1846 at Dudley on free bmd and I need to know the church
I can go on this site
http://www.bmsgh.org/

it will give me if they have added it to their indexes the year and church so I can toddle off down to Dudley ARchives
and look up say John Smith and Jane TAylor who married St Thomas Dudley 1846

if you go on here
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/

you can select a county and see if they have bmd transcribed indexed list.
eg Cheshire does
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

Northernlass....you.are.lovely!

That's exactly the kind of step by step, perfect for a thicko like me, instructions I needed! I think I get it now but as I'm not living in liverpool now I guess ordering certificates will be the way to go...this could get expensive! lol!

Very much appreciate all these pointers :P

I had a good teacher or two! both on this forum when I started.

I did loads of mithering it is the only way you learn.

See if you can find which church they married at
then contact the archives see if they have that marriage certif you can view and print off
should only cost you less than a quid to print it off cheaper than 9.25 via gro or 10 quid via regis office.

Peterd found that 1946 marriage
do you know which church it would be at?

meant to say if you use the ukbmd sites the last no is the entry no in the parish register
so you are able to go straight to the page in book.

free bmd
Marriages Sep 1946
Dawkins Bridget Dwyer Liverpool N. 10d 803
Dwyer Timothy Dawkins Liverpool N. 10d 803
Quilliam Sydney Wilson Liverpool N. 10d 803
Wilson Ida F Quilliam Liverpool N. 10d 803

You can order this online I think at Liverpool regis office
http://liverpool.gov.uk/births-marriage ... tificates/

or you can order online via the GRO
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

note the registry offices use a different ref no system but if you give them the names and the year and quarter ie sept
they should find it

it is cheaper via gro at moment.

You can in the meantime have a look for both of the couples births on free bmd
have you done that?

that will give you Timothys mothers maiden name.
Then armed with that you can try and find on free bmd a marriage between ******** and Dwyer around 1920's or before allow 20 years
so do a search for surname Dwyer and spouse of ******** (not giving you the name  ) and put in 1900 to 1925 see what you get.

Then when you get the marriage you can see if fathers name on there for Timothy matches the Marriage for a Dwyer and *****

have a go

do you want to start a new thread in General discussion with what you know? (bear in mind we will all dive in and answer it there)
or
do you want to start a new thread here in beginners with Dwyer investigations and see what you can find yourself while you wait for certifs.

Start a new thread for each query eg
Dwyer
and
Dawkins

that way it keeps everything easy for us to follow and you to understand.

up to you

That's very kind, thank you! Here's info on my maternal GP's:

GF - Timothy Dwyer, Born Liverpool, 28th Nov 1921, Died Liverpool Oct 1987 (he was, I believe in the first SBS/SAS commando's during WW2 and also served in Burma?)
GM - Bridget Dwyer (Dawkins) Born Liverpool, 4th Oct 1920, Died Liverpool April 29th 2002
They married in Liverpool, 1946 and had 5 children (Timothy, Sue, Tony, Collette - my mum! and John)

Obviously what is found is very important but for me how you find something, how you verify the info you find and how that can lead on to finding more is what I'm really interested in learning! I'm signed up to ancestry.com if that helps? (so you know what I'll be using)

Thanks again, this really is appreciated!

Mick
