Dale in Glasgow Scotland

Postby Karren » Sat May 26, 2012 8:23 am

Good Morning

I am looking for some advice on tracing the birth place of George William Harvey Dale c1836 shown on the Scottish census from 1861 to 1891in Hutchesontown/Govan, Glasgow.

The census tells me he was born in England, but no further detail.

Being a real beginner, and typing in Google Scottish genealogy/ancestry etc etc brings up a wealth of information and to be honest I have no clue where I should head to ascertain some further detail.

Can anyone offer me some pointers?

Should I simply take all the births of George W H Dale born in England around that time and work it out by process of elimination?

Hi Karren,
Welcome to the forum,

Civil registration didn't start till later in 1837, so there will be no birth registration for him, only baptism record.

I suggest you start with this one,

Extracted,
GEORGE WILLIAM HARVEY DALE.
Christening, 29 MAR 1836. Saint Mary, Stafford
Parents:
THOMAS DALE.
JOANNA.

Poss, extracted,
THOMAS DALE.
JOHANNA MIDDLETON.
Marriage: 12 MAY 1835. Saint Marys, Handsworth, Stafford.

Thank you for the welcome Jimmy and the information.

The extract you have given me fits with the information I have, Johanna was also his daughter and he worked in Leather!

I guess now I need to search Baptism records first, for those born before 1837, thank you for that tip.

But if I may ask .. where did you get that extract from? I am using Genes and Ancestry and neither could find a baptism, even after my entering such specific search entries, (I guess that Stafford hasn't been transcribed yet).

Many thanks

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.
