"Work already carried out"

Postby Kleftiwallah » Wed May 02, 2012 4:49 pm

Starting (once again) to try and find out about the Oakes family. Where do I go to see if someone is already carrying out research into this family (or a branch of this family)?

I also have a few possible geographical areas of interest, Chelmsford, Camberwell, Walthamstow, Hackney, possibly Stoke Newington, the Old Kent Road. Anyone familiar with this 'neck of the woods'?

Cheers, Tony.

You could try just adding the name and year of birth to a search engine and see what comes up?
Search Tribal Pages, Genesreunited, Ancestry to name just a few.

You could add a thread to general for help in looking if you are stuck? Just add as much info as you can and see if we can help?

Thanks very much for your prompt and informative reply Jo. Every ten years or so, I get the urge, try my best get tired and confused and so it all goes 'back in the box'. I'll follow your advice. Cheers, Tony.

I think we all do that with some of our knottier problems. The good thing is that every now and then some new information source is put out on the internet.
Have you tried looking on the 1911 census yet? That can be a huge help in some cases.

Just a note of caution, as far as other people's work is concerned - try to get the sources of the information, and check things out for yourself. It's very easy to go down the wrong branch otherwise.
Other than that sharing information can be very informative - I've had people send me photo's etc of family members, that's always exciting.

I know what you mean Jo, I've just ordered a load, so the postman is very welcome at the moment!!
