MANSELL and NIGHTENGALE families

Postby sjs » Mon Nov 03, 2008 12:19 am

My ggg grandfather, Benjamin Mansell, Jr. was born 2 Jan 1828 in Dudley, the son of Benjamin and Hannah (Smith) Mansell. On July 18, 1847 Benjamin Mansell, Jr. married Mary Ann Nightengale at Dudley, England (marriage reference # 18 347). By 1851 census, the family had moved to Kidsgrove, North Staffordshire:

Benjamin MANSELL, 23, Puddler, born - Tipton, Staffs
Mary A MANSELL, 22, born - Tipton, Staffs
Martha MANSELL, 3, born - Tipton, Staffs
Hannah MANSELL, 1, born - Tipton, Staffs
Eliza MANSELL, 6 months, born - Kidsgrove

The next record for this family is ship passenger lists, found on castelgarden.org which shows the family left England around 1858-59 and arrived in Canada on March 25, 1859 on a ship named, Underwriter. The ship passenger records list the husband and wife's ages as 31 and Benjamin’s occupation as Puddler. John Mansell (my great-great grandfather) is listed as age 2, Martha is age 10, Eliza (Elisa) was age 6 and Anna was age 7. Several more children were born after the family moved to Canada. Benjamin Jr.'s younger brother, William, age 22, also accompanied the family to Canada.

Would love to hear from anyone connected with this family or Benjamin's wife, Mary Ann Nightengale.

Thanks,
Sherry (from Pennsylvania)
