William Devey Brettell m Helen Elizabeth Powell Dec qtr 1850
I have 1881 census they were living with their children at Grove Rd Kings Norton. I am trying to find his dob and interested in finding out how he was given the name William Devey Brettell. I want to know if he was related to William Devey, clockmaker of Dudley who lived in the late 1700's to 1800's. Is there anyone out there who can help?

Hi dumblonde, the 1881 Census gives Wm's age as 62 born Kings Heath, and Elizabeth is age 61 born Solihull. Meant to tell you that I found a Charles Brettell who was a Trustee of Hasbury Methodist Chapel in 1923, he was also the Choir Master, presume he is one of our Brettell family? Best Wishes from linell.

Have you got the marriage for this William Devey and Helen Elizabeth?

Marriages Dec 1850 BRETTELL William Devey Kings Norton 18 595

if so do you know his fathers name?
You need to work back.

He is born abt 1819 cos of census info so a bapt could be Warwickshire
but you need that fathers name.

Then at the same time work on the William Devey ancestry
and find the common ancestor or link
Probably a marriage to a Devey going back?

Does anyone have access to1871, 1861, 1851, 1841 Census records who might be kind enough to look up William Devey Brettell born <1819> to possibly help find his parents?

Don't know what a 7 year old would do to deserve her stay there.. bet it was horrific..

I googled and found this from wikipedia...'In England the 1857 Industrial Schools Act was intended to solve problems of juvenile delinquency, by removing poor and neglected children from their home environment to a boarding school. The Act allowed magistrates to send disorderly children to a residential industrial school.'

not sure where we are up to with this one?

Are we still looking for the father for William? in which case DB think it needs that marriage which is in Warks 1850...

Do you want to run with this a bit more or do you want to archive it pending more info?

So unless otherwise advised this topic will be moved to archived section within 24 hrs
it can easily be returned to the boards via sending Pete or I a pm
