On the marriage of Elijah and Maria Joseph the father is a mason so can we find him and Mary on the 1841 census
there might be some clues there to Mary being Gwyer.

Does a bricklayer count as a mason?
'Cos I've got this whacking great family of bricklaying Basterfield/Baskerfields in Halesowen with father Joseph Basterfield abt 1791/1787 and mother Mary 1791/1784. All living in Islington most of the time.

In my tree, I have Benjamin Basterfield, b. 1822 Halesowen, parents Joseph Basterfield abt 1787 - 1861 and Mary White 1784, marrying Elizabeth Cooksey. Maybe this is your Elijah's brother???

Here's my Benjamin:
1871 - New St., Hasbury
Benjamin Bastfeield Head 47 Bricklayer b. Worcs., Halesowen
Elizabeth Bastefield Wife 47 Nailor b. Staffs., Rowley
Maria Bastefield Daur 23 b. Worcs., Hasbury
John Bastefield Son 15 Brick Lab. b. Worcs., Hasbury
Thomas Baskefield Son 13 Nailor b. Worcs., Hasbury
Hannah Baskefield Daur 5 b. Worcs., Hasbury

Then there are these:

BASKERFIELD/BASTERFIELD - HALESOWEN

1841 - Short Cross(?), Halesowen

James Baskerfield 25 Bricklayer Y (This is son of Joseph & Mary below and this family is on Connections)
Elizabeth Baskerfield 25 Y
Priscilla Baskerfield 6 Y
Sarah Baskerfield 3 Y
Gideon Baskerfield 1 Y

Next page, same street:

Thomas Baskerfield 20 Nailer Y

Next page, same street:

Joseph Baskerfield 50 Nailer Y
Mary Baskerfield 50 Y
Benjamin Baskerfield 20 Y
Eliza Baskerfield 10 Y

Next page, same street:

Henry Baskerfield 20 Bricklayer Y
Sarah Baskerfield 20 Y

John Baskerfield 30 Bricklayer Y
Hariot Baskerfield 30 Y
John Baskerfield 4 Y

Another 2 pages, then:

Joseph Baskerfield 35 Bricklayer Y
Jane Baskerfield 35 Y
Mary Hadley 12 F.S. Y

Next page:
Stowerbridge Road, Halesowen
John Baskerfield 50 Bricklayer Y
Phebey Baskerfield 50
Edward Baskerfield 15

James Basterfield Head 36 Bricklayer - Nail Maker b. Halesowen
Elizabeth Basterfield Wife 35 Nail Maker b. Halesowen
Sarah Basterfield Daur 14 Nail Maker b. Halesowen
Gideon Basterfield Son 10 Scholar b. Halesowen
Joseph Basterfield Son 7 Scholar b. Halesowen
Benjamin Basterfield Son 4
Maria Basterfield Daur 1

45
Elizabeth Basterfield 8 Visitor (b. Halesowen) with William & Mary Shilcock

47
Joseph Basterfield Head Mar 63 Bricklayer b. Halesowen
Mary Basterfield Wife 66 Nail Maker b. Halesowen
Elizabeth Basterfield Daur 21 Nail Maker b. Halesowen
Priscilla Basterfield Grandchild 17 Nail Maker b. Halesowen (Links Joseph and Mary as parents of James married to Elizabeth in the 1841)
John Basterfield Grandchild 14 Nail Maker b. Halesowen [b]
Mary Ann Byngs Grandchild 2 b. Halesowen

52
John Basterfield Head Mar 40 Nail Maker - Mason’s Lab. b. Halesowen
Mary Basterfield Wife Mar 30 Nail Maker b. Halesowen

Phebe Partridge Lodger 17 Nail Maker b. Halesowen

I think this is all one family, and the ages and places would be right for Elijah to connect in as the son of Joseph Basterfield and Mary White.

Ah, can't resist this ....

Just to make NL feel SO much better, I noted this entry mentioned elsewhere on the forum. This is obviously John and Mary BASTERFIELD (see Mary A Byng with them in 1851). ... a Mary Ann BASTABLE , b. 1807 Halesowen, married Joram WILLETTS, b. 1805 Rowley Regis, father of the Mary Willetts who married Thomas WOODHOUSE!!! There you are, NL ... all your headaches in one basket!

1861
Joseph Bastable 80
Mary Bastable 70
John Bastable 29
Elizabeth Bastable 29
Joseph Bastable 18
Eliza Bastable 10
William Bastable 5
Mary A Byng 12
