Some of my ancestors are listed as boatman or canal worker - can anyone direct me to resources where I might find more details?

It was info sent to me by a relative, don't know where they got it and can't find the original. It gave Richard Wills, boatman, married to Elizabeth (unknown) and the children as listed in the 1881 Tipton Road details.
