Postby mallosa » Sat Apr 01, 2023 8:05 am

Gravestone of Westwood - James, Ellen & son Eli

gallery/image_page.php?album_id=169&image_id=6860

I'm sure this is the correct family on BCC - https://www.tribalpages.com/tribe/brows ... =365294041

James died Dec 19th 1904 age 47

Eli died April 14th 1924 age 30

Ellen died Sep 29th 1932 age 77

I added this note from information given to me over 13 years ago but it doesn't tie in : Family say he died in the flue epidemic in 1919 - Unable to find any record as yet

What do you think?

I don't have full access to 1921 census but I think this is right, which shows Eli is still living in 1921.

1921. Blackheath.
Eli Westwood born 1893.
Agnes Westwood 1893.
Kathleen Ellen Westwood 1915.
Edna May Westwood 1917.

WESTWOOD, KATHLEEN ELLEN EVANS.
GRO Reference: 1915 S Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 1.

WESTWOOD, EDNA MAY EVANS.
GRO Reference: 1917 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 20.

Possibly died from Smallpox, diphtheria.

The smallpox epidemic of 1868 led the corporation to build an isolation hospital in Deadman's Lane (then changed to Hospital Street). It was opened in 1872 when Walsall was already suffering from another smallpox epidemic.

It was reused during a smallpox epidemic in the 1890s and again during a diphtheria epidemic in 1924-5. (fn. 62) Meanwhile in 1900 a smallpox hospital was opened in Sneyd Lane, Bloxwich; it was retained until 1948. (fn. 63) The diphtheria epidemic emphasized the need for better accommodation.

Ah! So it looks like Enoch died in 1924 during the Diphtheria epidemic and Agnes married Joseph Birch in the same year? Could do with their marriage to confirm.

Thanks for that Jimmy
