Bakers of Commonside... Jo sorting

Postby Jayneh » Thu Dec 19, 2019 4:26 pm

Some of the children linked to Thomas Baker (b.1831) and Margaret Homer (b.1833) on the BCC tree do not seem to be their children e.g. from the evidence some appear to be nephews living with them on the 1861 census, and there may be one duplicate daughter.
https://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/t ... ver=481536

First, here is the GRO birth index references and baptism evidence for BAKER children with mother HOMER who appear CORRECTLY linked to parents Thomas Baker (b.1831) and Margaret Homer (b.1833):
1) BAKER, PHOEBE ELIZABETH , mother HOMER, GRO Reference: 1852 S Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 174.
Baptism Phoebe Elizabeth Baker , father Thomas Baker, mother Margaret, 31 Oct 1852 Kingswinford and St Marys Chapelry, Stafford, England.
2) BAKER, SARGANT , mother HOMER , GRO Reference: 1856 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 204.
Baptism FreeReg: Sergeant, father Thomas Baker, Miner, mother Margaret, Abode Commonside. Baptised 9 Nov 1856 St Mark, Pensenett Staffordshire, England.
3) BAKER, ANN , mother HOMER, GRO Reference: 1858 S Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 225
Baptism FeeeReg: Hannah, father Thomas Baker, Miner, mother Margaret, abode Commonside. Baptised 12 Jun 1859 St Mark, Pensnett, Staffordshire, England.
Note: Ann may be have been transcribed as Alice on the 1871 census.
4) BAKER, ISABELLA, mother HOMER, GRO Reference: 1863 M Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 217.
Baptism FreeReg: Isabella, father Thomas Baker, Miner, mother Margaret, abode Commonside. Baptised 24 May 1863 St Mark, Pensnett Staffordshire, England.
5) BAKER, SELINA, mother HOMER GRO Reference: 1864 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 231.
6) BAKER, ISAIAH, mother HOMER, GRO Reference: 1867 J Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 214.
Birth certificate: 4th Apr 1867, Commonside, Isaiah, father Thomas Baker, coal miner, mother Margaret Baker, formerly Homer.
7) BAKER, MARGARET GRO Reference: 1871 S Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 205. Mother listed as HORNER, but should be HOMER – error reported to GRO.
Birth certificate already viewed by Jo: Margaret BAKER, born 27th Aug 1871 at Commonside, Kingswinford to Thomas BAKER, coal miner and Margaret BAKER formerly HOMER (Superintendent Registrar’s District: Stourbridge).
8) Thomas Baker b. abt 1861: No appropriate GRO listing for him but instead a baptism to link him to parents Thomas and Margaret:
FreeReg: Thomas, father Thomas Baker, Miner, mother Margaret, abode Commonside. Baptized 10 Jan 1861 at St Mark, Pensnett Staffordshire, England.

TO ADD: Sarah Baker b. 1854 who died young is missing from the tree
BAKER, SARAH , mother HOMER , GRO Reference: 1854 J Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 206.

DELETE ALICE? Ann may be have been transcribed as Alice on the 1871 census. Both Ann and Alice on BCC tree as born 1859 and may be the same person.

REMOVE UNKNOWN Baker b abt 1855, he is likely to be a nephew; the 1861 census shows he is a grandson of Thomas Baker b abt 1805 the father of Thomas b. 1831.

MOVE BENJAMIN from children of Thomas Baker (b.1831) and Margaret Homer (b.1833) and transfer as son of Isaiah Baker b. 1827 (husband of Elizabeth Whitehouse and brother of Thomas Baker b. 1831):

Baptism FreeReg: Benjamin, father Isaiah Baker, Miner, mother Elizabeth, abode Commonside. Baptised 18 Jan 1857 St Mark, Pensnett, Staffordshire, England.
The 1861 census shows Benjamin is a grandson of the Thomas Baker b abt 1805, who was the father of Thomas b. 1831 and Isaiah b. 1827 (the latter appears to have been incorrectly transcribed as Josiah on this 1861 census; living in the same household as Isaiah's mother Pheobe, brother Thomas and children).

MOVE JOSEPH b. abt 1860 from children of Thomas Baker (b.1831) and Margaret Homer (b.1833) and transfer as son of Isaiah Baker b. 1827 and Elizabeth Whitehouse:

This could be the ‘Unknown’ Baker b 1855 on BCC and on the 1861 census with his name was transcribed as ‘Man’, though the writing doesn’t look like John.
3) BAKER, HARRIET , mother WHITEHOUSE , GRO Reference: 1859 M Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 248.

Thank you!
sorry if I’ve confused you, I think you’ve just added Thomas Baker in again born 1860/ 1861 so now he’s in twice.
He was baptism Jan 1861 so may have been born 1860 and already added by Margie in 2012, but I couldn’t find the GRO index for him.

Here are other grandchildren of Thomas Baker b abt 1805 and Phoebe Grice b. abt 1806 living in Commonside;
this time by their son Joseph Baker b. abt 1832 and wife Elizabeth Cooper b. abt. 1833
https://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/t ... ver=481627

Marriage FreeReg: Holy Trinity, Wordsley, Joseph Baker, full age, B, Miner, abode Wordsley, father Thomas Baker, Miner, and Elizabeth Cooper, 18, S, abode Wordsley, father Richard Cooper (deceased), Boatman. Witnesses Richard Geezer and Ann Davis.
This Elizabeth Cooper b. abt 1833 is not on BCC.

1861 Census
Commonside, Pensnett, Kingswinford ED12
Joseph Baker, Head, 28, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Elizebeth Baker, Wife, 26, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Mary Baker, Daughter, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Isaiah Baker, Son, 6, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Samuel Baker, Son, 2 Kingswinford Staffordshire
Sophia Homer, Boarder, 22, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Sarah Homer, Boarder, 2, Kingswinford Staffordshire

1871 Census
Commonside, Pensnett, Kingswinford ED14
Joseph Baker, Head, 38, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Elizabeth Baker, Wife, 38, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Isaiah Baker, Son, 15, Kingswinford Staffordshire d
Samuel Baker, Son, 12, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Elizabeth Baker, Daughter, 9, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Joseph Baker, Son, 7, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Elizah Baker, Son, 5, Kingswinford Staffordshire
Thomas Baker, Son, 2, Kingswinford Staffordshire

Note the son aged 5 on 1881 census is likely to be Elijah.

GRO birth index refs for the children of Joseph Baker b. abt 1832 and wife Elizabeth Cooper b. abt. 1833, sorry not many baptism transcripts found.
1) BAKER, MARY , mother COOPER , GRO Reference: 1853 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 188.
2) BAKER, ISAIAH , mother COOPER GRO Reference: 1856 M Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 230.
Baptism FreeReg: Isaiah, father Joseph Baker, Miner, mother Elizabeth, abode Bromley. Baptised 11 May 1856 St Mark Pensnett, Stafffordshire.
3) BAKER, SAMUEL , mother COOPER , GRO Reference: 1858 S Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 22.
Baptism FreeReg: Samuel, father Joseph Baker, Miner, mother Elizabeth, abode Commonside. Baptised 23 Sep 1859 St Mark, Pensenett, Staffordshire.
4) BAKER, ELIZABETH , mother COOPER, GRO Reference: 1861 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 188.
5) BAKER, JOSEPH , mother COOPER , GRO Reference: 1863 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 218.
6) BAKER, ELIJAH , mother COOPER , GRO Reference: 1866 J Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 236.
7) BAKER, THOMAS , mother COOPER , GRO Reference: 1869 M Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 197.
These do not seem to be on BCC elsewhere.

I also found BAKER, THOMAS , mother COOPER , GRO Reference: 1853 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 180, but I would not add because he doesn’t seem to fit in the family, too close in age to Mary (unless they are twins who are NOT recorded on the same GRO index page).

Note I believe the Sophia Homer on the 1861 census (Boarder, aged 22, born Kingswinford Staffordshire) is Helen Sophia Homer:
HOMER, HELEN SOPHIA , mother HINGLEY GRO Reference: 1839 D Quarter in STOURBRIDGE UNION Volume 18 Page 429.
Recorded as Ellen Homer b abt 1840 in BCC
https://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/t ... ver=481638
She is the sister of Margaret Homer b. abt 1833. who married Thomas Baker b. abt 1831, and therefore a sort of sister-in-law to Joseph Baker b. abt 1832 and wife Elizabeth Cooper b. abt. 1833.

Great, thank you.
Just one tweak needed - the surname for Elizabeth born 1853 to Joseph Baker needs changing from Cooper to Baker
https://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/t ... &ver=48193

then ready for archiving :-)
