ARC TBC...John Oakley Clara Blakemore bn abt 1862-1865

Postby Jayneh » Sun Nov 24, 2019 2:53 pm

Hi, I’m trying to work out the ancestors of John Oakley and his wife Clara, who are from the Bilston area, both born about 1862 to 1865.
I've been working on this for a 60th birthday present due 11th December, sorry I've not been contributing on other threads, but hope to later.

Marriage Index, 1886, Qtr2, Atcham, Shropshire, Vol 6A Page 1219
John Oakley married either Clara Jane Blakemore or Lizzie Roberts
I can’t find parish records for this to check the fathers names, can anyone please?

Here is the census and GRO information I've found for their children
1891 Census
13 New Street Bilston, Staffordshire
John Oakley, Head, Male, 28, bn Bilston Staffordshire
Clara Oakley, Wife, Female, 26, bn Bilston Staffordshire
John H Oakley, Son, Male, 4, Preston Shropshire
Edward R Oakley, Son, Male, 1, Priestfield Staffordshire

1901 Census
46 Mill Lane, Oldbury, North Worcestershire
John Oakley, Head, 38, Male, bn Darlaston, Staffordshire, England
Clara Oakley, Wife, 38, Female, bn Priestfield, Staffordshire, England
John Hy Oakley, Son, 14, Male, bn Priestfield, Staffordshire, England
Edward R Oakley, Son, 11, Male, bn Priestfield, Staffordshire, England
Clara E Oakley, Daughter, 8, Female, bn Priestfield, Staffordshire, England
Cyril Oakley, Son, 6, Male, bn Oldbury, Worcestershire, England
Emily Oakley, Daughter, 3, Female, bn Oldbury, Worcestershire, England

1911 Census:
65 Parsonage street, Oldbury, Staffordshire
Married 24 years , 11 children, 2 died
John Oakley, Head, 46, Male, Married, Labourer Brick Chiper, bn Bilston, Staffordshire
Clara Oakley, Wife, 45, Female, Married, 24, bn Pristfield, Staffordshire
John Henry Oakley, Son, 24, Male, Single, Labourer, bn Preston Gobbalds, Shropshire
Clara E Oakley, Daughter, 18, Female, Single, bn New Village, Ettingshall
Cyril Oakley, Son, 15, Male, Single, Labourer Driller, bn Corsway Green, Worcestershire
Emily Oakley, Daughter, 13, Female, school, bn Langley Green, Worcestershire
Gertrude Oakley, Daughter, 11, Female, school, bn Langley Green, Worcestershire
George Steven Oakley, Son, 9, Male, school, Langley Green, Worcestershire
Marion Oakley, Daughter, 6, Female, school, Langley Green, Worcestershire

Here is the GRO info for their children (Parents and none of their children are on BCC):

Thanks for looking, I wondered whether I might have missed something. I’ve been spoilt recently looking at Yorkshire records for another branch of the tree, where it’s easy to find images of marriage certificates online.

As RF said you really need to buy the marriage certificate...I can't see a birth registration on freebmd or GRO for Clara Jane? Nor census with parents Josiah and Emily? :?

Thanks, I'll buy the marriage certificate for John Oakley and Clara.
I don't think I was aware of the first christening. May be cousins both called Clara Blakemore, rather than a recording transcript error on both parents names Emily/Emma and Joseph/Josiah.
On GRO, a few Clara Blakemores born around 1865 in the Wolverhampton area, Clara Jane could be
BLAKEMORE, CLARA , mother BURGWIN
GRO Reference: 1865 S Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON Volume 06B Page 542

I haven't found Clara with parents Josiah and Emily on a census either.
As for parents marriage, on FMP I found a Emily Burgwin marrying a Thomas Harris
1 Sep 1856 • Sedgley, Stafford, England
Thomas Harris, 25, B, Labourer, Ettingshall, father Evan Harris Weaver, and Emily Burgwin, 21, S, Ettingshall, father John Burgwin, Labourer, Witness Evan Harris and Sarah Burgwin.

then a Josiah Blakemore marrying an Emma Harris not an Emily
14 Apr 1863 • Sedgley, Stafford, England
FReeReg Josiah Blakemore, 52 widower, boiler maker, Spring vale, father Josiah Blakemore Blacksmith, and Emma Harris widow, father John Burgwin labourer. Wit JE Lewis and Sarah Burgwin

Witness Sarah Burgwin at both marriages.

Then same year as marriage birth of a possible brother to Clara
BLAKEMORE, JOHN JOSEPH , mother BURGWIN GRO Reference: 1863 S Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON Volume 06B Page 495
Christening Index for John Josiah Blakemore
Birth date 7 June 1863
Christening 15 Jun 1863 • Ettingshall, Staffordshire, England
Father Josiah Blakemore
Mother Emily Blakemore

Hi, I’ve received the marriage certificate for John OAKLEY and Clara Jane BLAKEMORE
Marriage Index: 1886, Qtr2, Atcham, Shropshire, Vol 6A Page 1219
Certificate details: Register Office District of Atcham, County of Salop 25th April 1886
John Oakley, 22, B, Labourer, resident at Allbrighton, father Henry Oakley, Blacksmith and
Clara Jane Blakemore, 22, S, resident at Preston Gubbals, father Josiah Blakemore deceased, Boiler maker.
Witnesses J Everett (registrar), James Battersby and Mary Gregory.

The certificate shows Clara Jane Blakemore was resident at Preston Gubbals; this is the same place as her first child (John Henry Oakley) was born, but spelled Preston Gobbalds on the 1911 census
1911 Census:
65 Parsonage street, Oldbury, Staffordshire
Married 24 years , 11 children, 2 died
John Oakley, Head, 46, Male, Married, Labourer Brick Chiper, bn Bilston, Staffordshire
Clara Oakley, Wife, 45, Female, Married, 24, bn Pristfield, Staffordshire
John Henry Oakley, Son, 24, Male, Single, Labourer, bn Preston Gobbalds, Shropshire
Clara E Oakley, Daughter, 18, Female, Single, bn New Village, Ettingshall
Cyril Oakley, Son, 15, Male, Single, Labourer Driller, bn Corsway Green, Worcestershire
Emily Oakley, Daughter, 13, Female, school, bn Langley Green, Worcestershire
Gertrude Oakley, Daughter, 11, Female, school, bn Langley Green, Worcestershire
George Steven Oakley, Son, 9, Male, school, Langley Green, Worcestershire
Marion Oakley, Daughter, 6, Female, school, Langley Green, Worcestershire
Amelia Oakley, Daughter, 5, Female, school, Tat Bank Rd, Oldbury, Worcestershire

As seen in my first message, the 1981 census also has John Henry born in Preston, Shropshire but the 1901 census states Priestfield Stafordshire. Nevertheless this seems to be the same family that I’m interested in.
(GRO birth references for the children are also on my first message.)

I have a birth certificate for a Clara Blakemore relating to this GRO Reference
BLAKEMORE, CLARA , mother BURGWIN
1865 S Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON Volume 06B Page 542
Certificate details:
25 Aug 1865 Friezland Bilston, Clara, father Josiah Blakemore (deceased), Boiler maker (journeyman), mother Emma Blakemore, formerly Burgwin. Informant Emma Blakemore mother Frizland Bilston [note than the word ‘mother’ was underlined]

Note that the father Josiah Blakemore (deceased) Boiler maker ties up with the marriage certificate above.
However the mother is given as Emma rather than Emily as seen on this Christening:
Christening Freereg.
25th October 1865. Holy Trinity, Ettingshall.
Clara Jane, born 25th August 1865. Parents, Josiah and Emily Blakemore, Old Friezland, Boiler maker.

I wonder whether Emma and Emily are the same person? Or has Emma died and a relation called Emily Blakemore is taking on the role of mother? If you can throw any light on it please, I’d be grateful.

I can’t find Clara Jane on a census with an Emily or Emma Blakemore mother, however there is a Clara Blakemore as a visitor on:
1871 census , Ward Street?, Bilston, Staffordshire
Joseph Blakemore, Head, 26, Bilston Staffordshire
Sarah Blakemore, Wife, 23, Wolverhampton Staffordshire
Sarah Blakemore, Daughter, 4/12m , Bilston Staffordshire
Clara Blakemore, Visitor, 5 Bilston Staffordshire

I can see a possibility that Joseph may be an older half brother to Clara.

Great, thank you for all your replies.
I was wondering whether the name Emily and Emma often get used for the same person, so thanks for saying they often get mixed up.

I also wonder whether Joseph and Josiah often get mixed up too.
Josiah b abt 1846 seems to be recorded as Joseph on the 1851 census, but Josiah on most other things
1851. Wroxhall, Warwick
John Shakespear, head, 40, Ag Lab, Haseley, Warwickshire
Mary, wife, 60, Lapworth, Warwickshire
William, son, 13, Haseley, Warwickshire
Ann Neil, Visitor, 30, Lapworth, Warwickshire
Henry Blakemore, Visitor, 7, Bilston
Joseph, Visitor, 5, Bilston
George, Visitor, 2, Bilston

Also I wonder whether this is the same person recorded as Joseph here with Clara who may be Clara Jane (making her a half sister).
1871 census , Ward Street?, Bilston, Staffordshire
Joseph Blakemore, Head, 26, Bilston Staffordshire
Sarah Blakemore, Wife, 23, Wolverhampton Staffordshire
Sarah Blakemore, Daughter, 4/12m , Bilston Staffordshire
Clara Blakemore, Visitor, 5 Bilston Staffordshire

If his mother was Ann Neil, then I wonder whether this is him without a first name under BLAKEMAN on the GRO register
BLAKEMAN, - , mother NEEL
GRO Reference: 1846 M Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON & SEISDON Volume 17 Page 344
and his siblings
BLAKEMAN, HENRY , mother NAIL
GRO Reference: 1844 M Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON AND SEISDON Volume 17 Page 330
BLAKEMAN, GEORGE , mother NEAL
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON & SEISDON Volume 17 Page 349
BLAKEMAN, PHEBE , mother NEAL
GRO Reference: 1839 J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON & SEISDON Volume 17 Page 299
BLAKEMAN, PHEBE ANN NEALE
GRO Reference: 1851 D Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON Volume 17 Page 337
I can't find BLAKEMORE birth reg with mother NEAL or similar sounding names on GRO

It seems the name Blakeman was used rather than Blakemore between 1841 and 1851, or is it a different family?
