What's in a Name -template

Postby Northern Lass » Thu Oct 09, 2008 1:47 pm

Names help us tell each other apart.

They also hold interesting clues to our past.

Your Surname is a link between you and your ancestors, it can give you clues to where they came from, their language and how they might have made a living.
The word Surname comes from the French word surnom this comes from the latin words supra nomen meaning " an extra name".
Surnames have many possible origins. Your surname might be the nickname or the first name of your ancestors, or the name of the town or village they came from. Perhaps it was a feature on the landscape they came from or was what they did for a living.
