Re: 'Clarke 'Clark' history--Nl adding to Bcc

Hi.
There has been some excellent work done here, and I’m very grateful to you :-)
My username is harryfotta

The birth town of Manchester is consistent through the census records.
But I’m not 100% convinced John Clark was actually from Manchester.
Could his father William had been a boatman and on his travels?

It’s also messy because Richard Clarke, who married Emily Ellen Hotchkiss; both their mothers were sisters; Mary Ann Trumpeter and Ellen Trumpeter respectfully.

Have found this but the only mention of "boatman" is the 1861 census where John says that is his occupation, apart from that he is a Labourer.

1841 Pitt Street Manchester
Willm Clark 35 Waterman
Hanh Clark 30
Both born in County
No John

The 1871 census is interesting -

1871 24 Anson St. Dalton Lancashire
John Clark Head M 37 Labourer Manchester
Mary A Clark Wife F 28 Lab Iron Works Great Bridge ?
Sophia Clark Daughter F 11 Scholar Great Bridge
Richard Clark Son M 7 Scholar Great Bridge
William Clark Son M 1 Great Bridge
Isaac W Clayton Lodger M 28 Iron works Lab Lincolnshire

What on earth was they doing there, and how would they have got to this destination?

I searched for baptisms in Manchester but nothing concrete, but are available in Tipton.
William Clark, Martha Clark was 'Egginton'

Is there any records regarding people travelling on canal boats at this time?

There is a book on the Tipton Slasher the most famous Boatman they used to have fight each other over the locks

Is this still a Brickwall, or have you solved it?

Unless otherwise advised this will be moved to the Brickwalls Archived section
