Robyn wrote:Hello Gardener,

Thank you for the searches and providing the information. The family certainly did seem get around. I have no idea if Barry was married before Eunice.

Would you provide me with the earlier baptism's please in and around London? With Barry and Sarah parents?

Hayes born/baptised in Aberystwyth in 1834 must have died. There was another son named Hayes born in 1843 in Staffordshire and he is my ancestor. He married Sarah Andrews in 1867.

Thank you so much for your help.

Yes, the earlier Hayes died:
Name:Hayes P Leger
Death Age:17 MonthsRecord Type:Burial
Birth Date:1835
Death Date:abt 1836
Burial Date:30 May 1836Burial Place:Aberystwyth St Michael, Cardiganshire, Wales

Here is one earlier entry:

Name: Richard Arthur St Leger
Baptism Date: 18 Apr 1824
Baptism Place: St. Andrew's, Holborn, Middlesex, England
Father: Barry St Leger Book binder
Mother: Sarah St Leger
Born 12 July 1823
Address: Grays Inn Lane
FHL Film Number: 374358

and there seems to be a girl too, who married in 1841

Name: Sarah Jane St Leger
Gender: Female
Marriage Age: 20
Record Type: Marriage
Birth Date: abt 1821
Marriage Date: 21 Nov 1841
Marriage Place: Christ Church, Hoxton, Hackney, England
Father: Barry Boyle St Leger book binder
Spouse: William Martin Best
(an Emily St Leger is a witness)

The Bests seems to already be together in 1841, with a son William aged 1, and all born in county (Middlesex)

And there is an 1857 marriage for what seems to be Emily St Leger, the witness above:

Name: Emily Fisher
Gender: Female
Marriage Age: 40
Record Type: Marriage
Birth Date: abt 1817
Marriage Date: 2 Mar 1857
Marriage Place: St Philip, Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets, England
Father: Barry St Leger book binder
Spouse: Thomas Faircloth
Emily's address is in Hoxton

Name: Amelia Ledger
Baptism Date: 21 May 1813
Baptism Place: Northampton, St Sepulchre, Northamptonshire, England
Father: Barrey Ledger book binder
Mother: Sarah Ledger

1841
Hoxton
John Fisher 40
Emily Fisher 25
Ann Fisher 8

1851
Hoxton Old Town
Sarah Ledger 70 married laundress Staffs, Sedgley
Emily Fisher 32 dau married book binder Northampton
Ann Fisher 18 gdau London
Wm Best 11 Gson London (I think this is Sarah Jane's son)

It all seems to fit together, with Barry as a book binder all the time, but if this is the same man then he seems to have begun his second family while his first wife was still around. So Really I am not sure!

I also find it weird that the "posh" St Leger family have very similar first names! So there was Hayes St Leger, 2nd Viscount Doneraile (1755-1819), and his younger brother had a son called Francis Barry Boyle St Leger. The names are so similar but there can hardly be much connection to a Wolverhampton family in the workhouse! Sorry :-)

Hello all,

I've been trying to get my head around all of this! I'm impressed.

This find of kdwoodie has changed everything for me. The Eunice (married to Barry) I thought had died in 1847 Wolverhampton must have been Eunice the younger b. abt. 1832/33 daughter of Barry and Eunice.
Now I see that in 1861 Eunice is living with William Brown. The daughter Mary Ann aged 5 is a St Ledger and not a Brown, I think. Mary Ann St Legar birth reg. 1856 in Wolverhampton. So where is Eunice in 1851? Hayes in the workhouse? And where is son Barry (b.1841)?
Mary Ledger in 1871 a boarder she must also be related.
I now see in 1891 a Henry St Ledger aged 5 nephew born Willenall? Don't know where he fits in. Sounds like Barry St Ledger was leading a complicated life but what became of him?
Thank you for helping me to lift the lid on this family.

I am confused now. Who is the Eunice aged 35 in 1841 living with William Brown? Twenty years later in 1861 she's even younger.
In the 1861 census Eunice is aged 30? Then 1871 she's 39. And in 1891 she's 65. Looks like Barry the younger living with the Hope family in 1851 & 1861.

Thank you.
