Homer family

Postby Frodo » Wed Jan 26, 2022 8:14 pm

I am trying to ascertain the relationship between three people with the surname Homer for my cousin in America. They are connected to Isabel Payton, her grandmother via the female line. Isabel's aunt Martha Hay (1881-1974) married William Homer (1864(3?)-1942) . My cousin does not know of any children they might have had they did bring up two children with the surname Homer but we have been unable to confirm their parentage. During my research I have been unable to locate William in Censuses beyond 1881 until 1939 Register and cannot find Martha in 1911 when she was still living with her parents. They lived in Halesowen.

From research I have done using the 1921 Census, Ancestry and Family Search I have the family on holiday in Llandudno. Living with William and Martha are Barbara Joan Homer age 8 born Old Hill October-December 1912and her sister Margaret Pauline age 5 born 23rd February 1916. They are listed as grandaughters and the parents are listed as being alive. I have managed to locate birth information confirming the dates and on it the parent (mother) has the surname Cartwright. Both girls married in 1937 Barbara to a John Caleb Hogg and Pauline to Eric Gordon Coombes. I also found death records, Barbara died October 1976 in Birmingham, Pauline died December 1979/January 1980 in Walsall.

William and Martha are both on Connection but not matched up, the two children are not. Is there anyway of sourcing their parents. Do Martha and William have a son who had a relationship with someone called Cartwright or is there another answer?

My cousin in America knows that Martha was a live in nurse maid in 1905 then became a dressmaker so the 1911 Census makes sense.
In the 1921 Census William is an Agricultural Implement Maker so that could be the correct census. If so is there a death entry or divorce? for Elizabeth. William and Martha were married in 1919.
We also have Neri as William's father.
Could William Homer age 11 in 1901 be a connection to Barbara and Pauline?

Could William Homer age 11 in 1901 be a connection to Barbara and Pauline? Do you mean Walter ?

He could be the father of the girls.

Can you check 1921 census for Walter and Lavinia ?

Possible death for Elizabeth

I have just looked up Walter and Lavinia Homer and in 1921 they were living on Woodlands Barrs Road, Old Hill with a servant called Edith May Matthews. Walter age 31, Lavinia 32. Walter was manager at Mr Homer & Son, Chain Harrows and C Manufacturers. Lavinia was on home duties.
By chance I am at Manchester Central Library, we have free access to the Census in Manchester but are only allowed to log on for a limited amount of time 9.30-3.30 Monday to Friday so any further look ups may have to wait until another visit.

Could the 1921 Census be added for William and Martha? On Census Day they were at 7 and 8 Hill Terrace, Llandudno as visitors. I looked the address up and it is currently an hotel so I presume it was then. With them were Barbara Joan and Margaret Pauline listed as grandchildren. They are listed as Homer not Cartwright. Can this be changed or a note added on Connection as I noticed they have been added with the surname Cartwright. William was an Agricultural Implement Manufacturer, Martha on Home Duties.
I made copies of the Census entries if they are needed I could email them to Mallosa.

That makes sense, I must admit I was surprised that I didn't have to pay. For me it is just a photocopy at 20p a sheet. I live in Manchester and Central Library was chosen as one of the three places in the country with free access to the Census but I went anticipating making notes to save paying the fees but we are allowed to do print outs.
