Payton family connections

Postby Frodo » Mon Apr 05, 2021 10:46 am

I am working on the family history with a relative in America who is Isabel Payton's granddaughter and noticed missing information on Bcc. I have a lot of information which has been passed down through the generations.
In particular I noticed Bcc has Herbert Payton married to Sarah ?. This is Sarah Ann Hay(21st December-28th November 1936). Her parents were John Hay 29th June 1837-12th November 1908) and Eliza Allen (1837-October 1918). Could these be added?

I will ask my cousin to either cross check the information on line or send me a completely up to date comprehensive tree so I can do the same. As she lives in America the time lag will mean I might not find out until possibly tomorrow.
I do know that John Hay's parents were Thomas Knight Reynolds (it only appears as Reynolds on a lot of Censuses etc) (1800-1860) and Elizabeth Hay (1811-1874). They married in 1841.
We do not know whether Thomas was John's natural father as they were not married until 1841 and John was raised by Elizabeth's parents while she lived elsewhere until the marriage.
Joseph Payton's parents were John Payton (1787-1838) and Susannah Wilkes (1813-1884), they married in 1831.
Again I will get confirmation/more information from my cousin as we have both made a lot of changes and additions to the family tree in recent months.

I have received a lot of information from my cousin. Some of this information just confirms what is on Connections rather than being new but seems a simpler way of passing it on to you.
John Hay baptism 29th June 1837, death 12th November 1908, buried 14th November 1908 Halesowen churchyard.

Elizabeth Allen Hay born 28th December 1836 in Warwick, Birmingham. Baptism 30th January 1837. Death 7th October 1918 in Dudley. Daughter of James and Sarah Ann Allen.

John Hay and Eliza Allen had another child: John Hay stillborn died 1st January 1875.

There is no family records of Catherine and Rosina but the information on Connections seems to make sense.

Elizabeth married Andrew Moore. She died in 1947.
Charlotte died in 1916. Married Arthur ? Had an adopted boy Reggie.
Mary Matilda died 15th May 1857. Remained unmarried.
John Hay stillborn 1st January 1875.
Dora Hay married John Thomas Johnson, a widower with two daughters Carrie and Lucy. They had two daughters Amy and Dora.

I am still waiting for up to date information for the Payton family and so will add more later.

I will have a look probably this evening and contact my cousin about anything I'm unsure of. Again there will be a delay as I am emailing to America. I have been sent a lot of information overnight which I will send when I have chance.

For information the family tree updates are coming from the grandaughter of Albert David Taylor, daughter of Gordon Taylor.

I have sent details to my cousin and await a reply. I do have information on John Hay's baptism from my cousin:

Baptism 29th June 1837 at Rochford Parish. Rochford Parish records held at Hereford have an entry which records the baptism of John Hay (1837) on pg20,no158 "Baptisms 29th June 1837; Child's Name:John Hay; Parents Name, Elizabeth Hay;Occupation: Single Woman; Rochford Parrish Hereford; Baptised by George Hall, Rector"

Ancestry found the record in England Select Births and Christenings FHL film number 374935.

The spelling of the place seems to vary from Rochford to Rockford but as far as I can tell Rochford is correct.

We have been trying to establish the name of the father with no success. John was brought up by Elizabeth's parents until she married Thomas Reynolds. He appears with them in the 1841 census but is with Thomas and Elizabeth in 1851 and is called son so not sure of the connection.

My cousin is happy to go with the information you have using GRO. The information she has on this part of the family is from the memories of an aunty so the death date could well have been different. There is no mention of a Reggie but if he was fostered rather than adopted that would make sense. She also does not know anything about the Williams and Jones families listed at Congreaves Road. There was a presumption that Carrie was short for Catherine but presumably it was short for Caroline.
Will John Hay's father still be listed as unknown with Elizabeth as mother or Thomas Knight Reynolds added with a note re possibly not being the natural father?
