Hello,

I have just purchased a birth certificate from GRO and I am having a bit of difficulty reading the hand writing.

Birth Certificate

(Its a big picture but please take a look)

I am stuck on column 7. I can see the Mary Hart, Mother and Wenhaston but I cant work out the rest.

Also I think her maiden name is Cross. Is this correct?

Hi Ben,

I'm pretty sure it says "Her X mark", denoting the fact Mary was illiterate. About 50% of my rural ancestors did the same on certificates.

question of whether mother could write was irrelevant.

Yes, it says CROSS

Yes, it says WENHASTON
