1939 Register - COMPLETED

Postby SRD » Thu Nov 17, 2016 9:39 pm

I don't know if you can look up addresses in the register but I'm trying to find the residents of 1 & 2 Orchard Cottages, Swanley, Kent. They may have been called Jackson.

Please can anyone help?

Thanks

Yes you can look up addresses... tried Orchard Cottages but no luck. Would be useful to have a 'road' or
perhaps a first name for Jackson. quite a few Jacksons on Swanley Rd. Any more info: ???

Tricky that one, the two houses were on a footpath, possibly called Church Path which led off what was known as Swanley Road, nowadays it's called Swanley Village Road. In those days Swanley was a village away from Swanley Junction (where the railway station was). Nowadays Swanley is Old Swanley or Swanley Village and Swanley Junction is Swanley.
Roads in Old Swanley that I'm sure of were Highlands Hill, School Lane, Beechenlea Lane, Foxes Lane, Button Street and Wood Street but Swanley Road may have been the equivalent of the high street or it may have been the road between Swanley & Swanley Junction.

There may have been an Alice Jackson and their immediate neighbours may have been called Crawford (I'd be interested in them as well, he may have been a doctor). Physically neighbouring properties were The Orchard and 1, 2 & 3 Church Cottages on Foxes Lane (I'd be interested in the inhabitants there too, possibly Moore, Butcher & Fielding). Also The Old College and Old College Cottages, possibly Hotchkiss, Whitehead, Moody & Clapworthy.

Thanks, but that's Bexley, I didn't realise there was a Swanley Road in Bexley. I think Swanley itself comes under Dartford.

2 Swanley Village is the one, thanks very much.

That map is of Swanley Junction that became Swanley. It grew up around the railway station that was originally called Sevenoaks Junction because the line to Sevenoaks branched off the main line there but so many people got off thinking they'd reached Sevenoaks which was actually ten miles further on. So they changed the name of the Station to Swanley Junction as it was just in the Parish of Swanley despite Crockenhill being the closer settlement.

When I was a lad the signs on the roads leading into Swanley Village read Swanley but were changed to Swanley Village just as I reached my teens so I assumed that the official changes in name occurred in the late 60s. We always referred to going to 'the Junction' when referring to Swanley. It would appear that for registration purposes etc. the name was changed much earlier and the council only got around to changing the signs in my childhood.

I don't suppose you had any luck with the Crawfords did you.
