Adoption in Blackpool

Postby carlton » Fri Oct 27, 2006 8:34 pm

Hi, I'm new to family history research and this forum, and wondered if any one can help with the following query.

One of my ancestors Cicely Elston, born 1893 Fyldy Lancashire, was listed in the 1901 census return as the adopted daughter of Thomas Hogg.

I cannot find any marriage or death records for Cicely after this date on the internet, any idea where I can look for further information ?

Would Cicely's surname have been changed after adoption ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Carlton

This looks to be Cicely's birth registration:

Name: Cicely Elston
Year of Registration: 1893
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
DISTRICT: Fylde
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8e
Page: 708

A copy of her birth cert should give mother's name ....
It's possible her mother married Thomas Hogg some time between 1893 & 1901 .....
Also Cicely could be using the surname Hogg after 1901 ....

My advice would be to purchase a copy of the birth cert. to start with, from there we may be able to work out whether she was the "adopted" or "step" daughter of Thomas, census returns are not alway's 100% accurate when listing relationships ..... or names/ages etc. for that matter!!

Hi , thanks for the responses.I have subsequently been contacted by a living relative of the young lady in question.

Cicely was adopted due to the death of her mother, all other children remained with the father.

Cicely subsequently married and moved to Canada in the late 1920's, unfortunately we do not now what became of her or her family after they emigrated.

Any one know were you can find records of emigration to Canada !!

There is also this site:
http://www.theshipslist.com/

Think most of the passenger lists are much too early for what you need, however there are some links further down the page regarding Canadian Record sources and Ships arrival information etc. which may be of some use to you.

Thanks for the additional info, much appreciated.

Cicely married James William Atkinson on 17th April 1922 and I have information which states they landed at St Johns ( New Brunswick) in 1925

Any more help or pointers greatly appreciated.
