I'd firstly like to say hello as a newcomer :)

I've just started my family tree. Can anyone tell me where i can find online, a site for official marriage, birth certificates etc. I found a couple but they seem to be sites where i tell them everything and hand over a huge wad of money, for doing something i can probably do easier and cheaper myself. I'm just not sure where to look. I have family history in both England and Scotland.
Any information about genealogy is much appreciated

Thankyou

Ian

I'm afraid the only census free is the 1881 Census.
All others between 1841 and 1901 you have to pay for through various websites.
To verify the Census's, you need BMD Certs at £7 a time at the Register Offices or GRO.
It all depends how seriously you want to know your Family History!

From a Genealogists point of view, it all starts at the 1901 Census.
For instance, if you know your grandfathers DoB, obtain the cert at his local Reg Office. This will give info to his FULL name, his parents FULL names inc maiden name for his mother.

If you have any difficulties, give all info you have with names etc, and I am sure people will help you out
